Russian President Vladimir Putin could attempt a limited action against a NATO member in the coming years, according to a new US intelligence assessment reported by The Wall Street Journal. The report marks a notable shift from earlier American assessments, which had concluded that Moscow was unlikely to provoke the alliance while the war in Ukraine continued.<\/p>\n

The assessment, described by US officials in the WSJ report, examines a range of possible scenarios \u2013 from cyberattacks and other hybrid operations to a small-scale land incursion against a NATO country. It does not suggest that such an attack is imminent, but it reflects growing concern in Washington that Russia may seek to test the alliance\u2019s unity and resolve.<\/p>\n

the report says that US officials believe the most extreme scenario \u2013 a limited military incursion \u2013 remains low probability, though the risk could increase over time. The time frame being discussed reportedly extends from later this year through 2029.<\/p>\n

The reassessment comes as Russia faces mounting pressure in Ukraine. Ukrainian drone strikes have increasingly targeted Russian military assets and energy infrastructure, while Moscow\u2019s battlefield gains have become smaller and more costly. According to the report, some US officials fear that a Kremlin leadership under pressure could become more willing to take risks abroad.<\/p>\n

Recent incidents have added to Western concerns. Russian missiles have previously crossed into Poland, and drones have entered Romanian territory, raising questions about whether such episodes are accidental or part of broader probing behaviour. NATO officials have repeatedly said the alliance is monitoring the situation closely and remains prepared to deter and defend its members.<\/p>\n

A key issue highlighted in the report is the challenge posed by \u201csub-Article 5″ actions \u2013 operations that fall short of a conventional armed attack. While NATO\u2019s collective defence clause is clear in the event of a direct military assault, responses to cyberattacks, disinformation campaigns or covert operations are less straightforward. Analysts quoted by the newspaper said that ambiguity could make hybrid tactics attractive to Moscow.<\/p>\n

The Wall Street Journal also reported that the intelligence review comes amid debate in Washington over US weapons stockpiles after extensive support for Ukraine and military operations in the Middle East. The Pentagon has publicly rejected suggestions that American munitions shortages would weaken US deterrence.<\/p>\n
