NATO fighter jets were scrambled over 250% more frequently as Russia probes the West’s defences<\/a> amid mounting concerns over World War Three.<\/p>\n

The sharp rise in monthly statistics for July, when set against the equivalent period in 2025, highlights Vladimir Putin<\/a>‘s ever more belligerent military stance.<\/a><\/p>\n

“The numbers do not lie,” stated a post by NATO’s Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum.<\/p>\n

“Compare July 2025 with July 2026, and the picture becomes clear: scrambles on NATO’s eastern flank increased by more than 250%. The reason? Russian military aircraft repeatedly flew close to NATO airspace without a flight plan and transponder signal, leaving our fighters to launch, intercept, and identify them. Every scramble proves that we are alert. Every interception proves that NATO airspace is protected.”<\/p>\n

In a separate development on August 3, Polish fighter jets intercepted a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft roughly 37 miles north of Leba in the Baltic Sea.<\/p>\n

That very same day, two Italian Eurofighter Typhoons took off from \u0160iauliai, Lithuania, responding to direct instructions from NATO’s Combined Air Operations Center, to intercept two Russian military aircraft flying over the Baltic. The aircraft types were not disclosed, and both stayed within international airspace.<\/p>\n

While Russian aircraft generally steer clear of entering NATO airspace directly, alliance jets have been scrambled on numerous occasions in response to Putin’s drone violations over Romania. On August 2, alliance warplanes were dispatched after a Russian drone breached NATO airspace over Romania for 20 minutes.<\/p>\n

Ukraine<\/a> brought down the aircraft after it left Romanian territory.<\/p>\n

The incident highlighted Moscow’s contempt for clear Western warnings to halt its kamikaze drone incursions. This represented the fourth time in ten days that a Russian Shahed drone had encroached upon Romanian airspace.<\/p>\n

Three were destroyed by scrambled Romanian F-16 fighters on 24, 25 and 26 July.<\/p>\n

Subsequently, on 30 July, NATO sent fighter jets over Poland after a nuclear-capable Kh-101 missile breached Polish airspace by nearly 60 miles before coming down in a field in the Lublin region.<\/p>\n

In another incident, a NATO Saab JAS 39 Gripen supersonic multirole fighter was photographed intercepting a Russian Aerospace Forces Tu-22M3 bomber as it travelled over the Baltic Sea on 21 July.<\/p>\n

The photograph was taken from the Russian nuclear-capable aircraft.<\/p>\n

Fears are growing that the Ukrainian conflict could escalate as provocations increase, potentially dragging NATO members into direct combat.<\/p>\n

NATO’s unease over Russian probes heightened as Moscow today claimed to have shot down more than 600 Ukrainian drones. Despite these assertions, Kyiv drones set ablaze one of Russia<\/a>‘s biggest oil refineries – Slavneft-YANOS in Yaroslavl, 155 miles northeast of Moscow, sparking multiple distinct fires throughout the site.<\/p>\n

Thick smoke billowed into the sky from the complex, which is critical for oil deliveries to the Russian military and the capital.<\/p>\n
