CBS and NIDI Report: 2,551 Centenarians in Netherlands at Start of 2026 - News and Statistics

At the start of 2026, the Netherlands was home to 2,551 individuals aged 100 or older, with 82 percent of them being women, according to a joint report by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) and the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI).

The number of centenarians has remained relatively stable over the past five years. Among them, 1,104 were exactly 100 years old, 666 were aged 101, and 372 were 102 years old, while more than 400 were 103 or older.

The likelihood of reaching 100 has increased dramatically since 1812, particularly for women. For birth cohorts between 1812 and 1850, an average of 13 out of every 100 thousand people lived to 100 or beyond. This figure rose to over 300 per 100 thousand for cohorts born near the end of the 19th century, and exceeded 700 per 100 thousand for those born between 1920 and 1923.

Women consistently have a much higher chance than men of reaching 100. The rate increased from 16 per 100 thousand women born between 1812 and 1850 to 1.2 thousand per 100 thousand among women born after 1919. For men, the corresponding rise was from 10 per 100 thousand to 270. This widening gap in life expectancy between the sexes grew especially between 1950 and 1970, largely attributed to smoking, which was predominantly a male habit at the time.

Regional differences in reaching 100 also exist. Among people born between 1812 and 1923, the rate ranged from fewer than 180 per 100 thousand in Zuid-Limburg to more than 270 per 100 thousand in Zeeland, several regions in the northeastern Netherlands, and in and around Rotterdam, The Hague, and Haarlem. These differences may be linked to variations in childhood living conditions and residential environment, as well as genetic factors.

The researchers noted that living environment, social connections, a healthy lifestyle, and the migration of affluent and healthy individuals to more prosperous regions likely contribute to the chance of living to a very old age.
