BYD is building European manufacturing capacity not for where the market is, but where it expects it to be in five years. By Stewart Burnett
BYD is in talks with Stellantis and other European automakers about acquiring one or more of their underutilised factories in the region, with Italy explicitly named as a priority destination. The potential acquisition would sit alongside its plants in Hungary and Turkey—both due to begin mass production later in 2026—and could effectively shelve a planned greenfield development in Spain.
