India’s Semiconductor Push Gets Major Boost As Tata Partners With ASML

In a breakthrough partnership, India’s Tata Electronics has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Netherlands ‘ ASML, one of the world’s largest semiconductor equipment manufacturing companies. The deal aims to advance the semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem in India, with ASML enabling the establishment and successful ramp of Tata Electronics’ upcoming 300 mm (12 inch) semiconductor fab in Dholera, Gujarat.

“The collaboration between Tata Electronics and ASML will focus on deploying ASML’s holistic suite of advanced lithography tools and solutions for the Dholera fab,” both companies announced in a joint press release.

They will also cooperate to develop domestic talent, supply chain, and research initiative to support the long-term success of Tata Electronics’ Dholera Fab.

It is India’s first planned commercial semiconductor fabrication plant or simply chip-making factory. According to the company’s website, it is expected to have a total monthly capacity of 50,000 wafers for Analog and Logic IC chips based on 28nm to 110nm technologies.

The foundry is being set up, with partnership as part of India’s attempt to become the global manufacturing hub under the India Semiconductor Mission.

With a planned total investment of US$11 Bn, the facility will manufacture semiconductors for a variety of applications across automotive, mobile devices, artificial intelligence (AI), and other key segments, to serve customers globally.

Tata Electronics has strategically partnered with key global customers and ecosystem companies, starting with PSMC (Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation, Taiwan), thereby gaining access to a broad technology portfolio including 28nm, 40nm, 55nm, 90nm, and 110nm.

What ASML Partnership Means For India’s Global Chip Ambition

The importance of ASML can be understood by the fact that it is the world’s only producer of EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet) lithography machines, the most advanced chipmaking equipment available.

These machines are quintessential to manufacture advanced chips used in AI, smartphones, data centers and high-performance computing.

Top chip manufacturing companies in the world, including TSMC, Samsung Electronics, and Intel are dependent on ASML machines to produce chips.

With joining hands with ASML, Tata Electronics has now access to these top state-of-the-art machines, allowing to produce even advanced chips, expanding its broad technology portfolio including 28nm, 40nm, 55nm, 90nm, and 110nm.

It will help India build domestic chip manufacturing capability, reduce dependence on imports, attract global customers and create a reliable semiconductor ecosystem.
