Tata Electronics, which is already working on commercialising India’s first silicon chip manufacturing units, has entered into partnership with Dutch giant ASML to acquire lithographic technology. ASML, the only company in the world that makes EUV lithographic machines, will supply some of its key technologies to Tata that will enable the Indian company to make advanced chips.
While ASML does not manufacture chips on its own, it makes the machines that create the world’s most advanced silicon chips. These machines are used by all top chip-makers in the world, from Intel to TSMC to Samsung.
Though, to start with, in India the two companies are taking a more calibrated approach, likely to first test the limits and contours of the partnership. In a joint statement, the companies said “through this partnership, ASML will enable the establishment and successful ramp of Tata Electronics’ upcoming 300 mm semiconductor fab in Dholera.”
In other words, the cutting-edge ASML technology that enables companies like TSMC in Taiwan to create 5nm and 3nm AI chips will have to wait for a while.
Still, the partnership between Tata and ASML is a significant moment for India’s nascent semiconductors industry. As India invests thousands of crores in the sector, the partnership with ASML is bound to give it access to the right tools and technologies in the coming months and years.
The signing of the agreement between the two companies was witnessed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister of the Netherlands Rob Jetten. “The two Prime Ministers welcomed the decision of Tata Electronics and ASML to partner together for India’s first front-end semiconductor fab in Gujarat,” a note issued by the Press Information Bureau highlighted.
Commenting on the partnership, PM Modi said on X, “India’s strides in the world of semiconductors offers immense opportunities for the youth of our nation. This is a sector in which we will keep adding vigour in the times to come.”
Tata Electronics is developing India’s first 300 mm commercial fab in Dholera. The company already has a partnership with PSMC of Taiwan, which is helping it create fabs capable of manufacturing chips with modern nodes like 28nm, 40nm, 55nm, 90nm, and 110nm. It is expected that the first Tata-made silicon chips at 28nm would roll out of the fab this year.
