King and Queen of the Netherlands visit Philadelphia
The Netherlands’ King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima, as well as Dutch government members, met with Shapiro Monday morning to discuss economic ties between the state and country.
Shapiro highlighted the “incredibly deep historical and cultural ties” shared between the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Netherlands.
The governor said conversations would continue that day to discuss how the two can increase trade.
“We already have a wonderful and robust trading arrangement that represents billions of dollars in commercial activity between the Commonwealth and the Kingdom, including our world-famous Hershey Chocolates that we send to the Netherlands” Shapiro said.
“We may be separated by an ocean, but we are bound by our shared history and promise of our future,” he continued.
The King and Queen thanked Shapiro for Pennsylvania’s hospitality, acknowledging the significance of the visit during preparations for America’s 250th anniversary.
“It’s important that we continue to cherish the centuries-old bond between our nations, because it was the essence of what [has] always united us. It is the origin of our democracy and the rule of law,” the King said.
The purpose of the visit, the royalty said, was to “reaffirm and strengthen our ties with you.”
King Willem-Alexander also expressed excitement to visit Fishtown as well as the Eagles’ stadium ahead of the FIFA World Cup this summer, in which the Netherlands will be represented.
