Tesla has dropped its first localized snapshot of public Full Self-Driving (Supervised) safety data in Europe, revealing how the software is handling complex international road layouts and laws. This comes exactly two months after the Dutch vehicle authority, RDW, granted a landmark type approval for FSD back in April, giving the system its first green light to navigate public European roads.

Analyzing the Dutch Safety Data

FSD’s initial European performance metrics show a commanding lead over human driving. As Tesla Europe announced in a post on X, data captured on public roads reveals a clear safety trend: “In the last 2 months, FSD Supervised has been over 3x safer than manual driving on Dutch roads.”

A detailed look at the safety data reveals that FSD (Supervised) recorded 3.5 times fewer collisions overall than manual driving in the Netherlands. FSD (Supervised) was 3.4 times safer on highways, logging zero total collisions across 16.6 million kilometers driven.

Beyond pure collision avoidance numbers, FSD exhibited a much smoother driving profile compared to human operation. Tesla’s fleet recorded 14.9 times fewer automatic emergency braking events with the software engaged, alongside an 8.8 times drop in harsh acceleration and a 7.3 times decrease in harsh braking scenarios. The system also logged 8 times fewer hard swerves, showcasing FSD’s ability to anticipate what the vehicles around it will do rather than strictly react to them.

Comparing European and North American Trends

“FSD (Supervised) enables your vehicle to drive you almost anywhere with your active supervision, requiring minimal intervention. When engaged and under your active supervision, your likelihood of being in a collision goes down,” Tesla says on its online Full Self-Driving Vehicle Safety Report, which outlines stats from all over the globe.

The system’s stellar safety record in the Netherlands mirrors trends documented across North America. According to Tesla’s current U.S. safety metrics, vehicles driving with FSD engaged go roughly 5.5 million miles before a major collision event, compared to a much lower 2.2 million miles for manually driven Teslas with safety features active, and an even lower 660,000 miles for the U.S. average with manual driving. This pegs FSD as being up to 7 times safer than the average U.S. driver.

While the North American data relies heavily on highway driving and long, grid-based city streets, FSD’s Dutch performance proves that Tesla’s neural networks can handle dense urban environments, narrow routes, cyclists, and complex roundabouts just as well. Globally, the platform has surpassed nearly 11 billion publicly driven miles, a number that continues to climb as international adoption spreads.

Hardware Constraints and the European Domino Effect

Currently, FSD is restricted to Hardware 4 (HW4/AI4) vehicles in the Netherlands and other active European markets. The fleet runs a localized point build of the main v14 software branch, featuring UI elements and other changes designed specifically for European traffic laws. However, the HW4 limitation could disappear later this summer when Tesla introduces FSD v14 Lite. That distilled, optimized variant is built specifically to bring the same features and functionality as the full v14 release to older Hardware 3 cars, and it will be available internationally.

Tesla is dropping the first glimpse of European FSD safety data as the software continues to pick up regulatory momentum in the region.
