Melania Trump, meanwhile, wore a white Erdem midi dress, adorned with appliquéd organza in an abstract floral design. King Willem-Alexander, President Trump, and Prime Minister Jetten all wore suits for the occasion.

The Trumps welcomed the Dutch royals with a red carpet reception, with all parties looking in high spirits after a somewhat controversial interaction at the NATO summit in the Netherlands last July.

Queen Maxima, who was hosting the summit, appeared to mock Trump’s facial expressions while making small talk in a clip that went viral on social media. The Dutch queen cleared up any confusion about the video during her annual summer photo session, telling AD that she had not been making fun of the President, but rather she had ‘said “thank you” to someone who had helped,’ going on to describe the meeting as a ‘pleasant experience’.

Her daughter, Crown Princess Catharina-Amalia, agreed that it was ‘really cool’ to have met ‘the president of America.’

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima’s meeting with the Trumps comes just weeks ahead of King Charles and Queen Camilla’s visit to the United States. Between 27 and 30 April, the King and Queen will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

According to a statement from Buckingham Palace, the trip is set to highlight the ‘historic connections and the modern bilateral relationship’ between the two countries. The jewel in the crown of the celebrations will be a state banquet at the White House on 28 April, which could provide an opportunity for Queen Camilla to don a tiara. King Charles is also expected to deliver an address to the United States Congress before making a solo visit to Bermuda.
