KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – With Team Netherlands based on the Plaza and playing at Kansas City Stadium this week, team pride around town is starting to shift from Royals blue and Chiefs red to Dutch orange.
Charlie Hustle, home to Kansas City merchandise, has plenty of its iconic tees in stock. But when it comes to Netherlands gear, the story is different.
“We’ve just been making them as fast as we can, to be honest,” said Joey Mendez of Charlie Hustle.
Orange shirts for the Dutch are flying off the shelves.
“It needs to be orange because the whole fan base wears orange, which we now have this one as well as another orange tee, and they’re all just sold out,” Mendez said.
The store’s whole orange inventory was gone in just one day.
“People come in from other stores. They’re like, we heard you might have an orange tee. And we’re like, we’re trying,” Mendez said.
Orange wave spreads across metro
That orange wave is reaching all corners of the metro.
Jennifer Brown owns Vintage Style KC. When she heard the team would be practicing just down the street from her downtown Parkville store, she wanted in on the orange excitement.
“It was sort of kind of by accident. Kind of not. But I just went looking for a shirt that had the Netherlands and also had Kansas City on it,” Brown said.
She placed an order for an orange shirt to be sold at her store. A unique color she didn’t have before. And she’s quickly learned everyone was looking for one.
“I ordered from there and then sold those out. And then I made another order and I sold those out. And then I made another order and I sold those out. So we’re going on order number four at this point,” Brown said.
The trend is coming to a head on Thursday when the Dutch take the pitch against Tunisia. Along with the game, comes the Orange Army and doubledecker Orange bus. Fans follow the bus before kick-off. In other host cities, this has resulted in a sea of orange in the streets.
So now with the game here just days away, Charlie Hustle says they’re working quickly to keep up with demand.
“I’m actually going to pick up more. They’re making them today. I’m going to pick up more this afternoon for the store,” Mendez said.
Mendez said that the order will hit shelves Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. at the Charlie Hustle locations on the Plaza and Oak Park Mall.
