A car ‘containing explosives‘ has been involved in a crash in a neighbourhood in Amsterdam following a police chase.
The incident happened this afternoon following a pursuit after an ATM ram-raid in Germany, according to local reports. The police, the military and other emergency services are on scene on Nierkerkestraat in Osdorp.
The street is cordoned off and homes on a hundred-metre radius have been evacuated as possible explosives were found in the crashed vehicle. One of the evacuated buildings is reportedly a care home.
The Defence Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) is present, along with drones, a helicopter and police dogs as a major incident has been declared. The car’s occupants – reported to be “several young men” – fled the scene and they remain at large, RTL reports.

Two witnesses told Het Parool the car was seen speeding through a bend “partly on two wheels” before the crash. This was allegedly followed by four young men jumping out of the vehicle and leaving the scene.
A resident said: “The whole neighborhood saw someone jump out of the car. A little later, people also saw a boy coming out of the bushes.”
The police pursuit reportedly started after a ram-raid in Germany at around 4.30am today, which allegedly involved a BMW M1. The vehicle is understood to have been seen in the city of Fürth in Bavaria, central Germany, before it was spotted in the Netherlands this morning.

The same car then crashed in Amsterdam Nieuw-West during the police chase, Dutch news website Nos reports. No money was stolen during the ATM explosion, German police explained, but the building in which the ATM was located was severely damaged.
A fire started as a result of the explosion but all residents were able to leave their homes safely. Armed forces personnel and masked officers from the Special Intervention Service remain at the scene in Fürth.
A police helicopter was also sent to circle overhead and the street where the explosion happened was cordoned off. A major incident was declared and videos from the scene showed multiple ambulances in the area.
