The Netherlands, 12 August 2026 – Xavi Hernández has taken charge of the Netherlands national team after reaching an agreement with the Royal Dutch Football Association, bringing the former Barcelona midfielder and manager back into football management after more than two years away from the dugout.
The development represents a major appointment for the Oranje and a new chapter in Xavi’s managerial career. Reports from Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf and transfer journalist Matteo Moretto had initially indicated that Xavi was among the leading candidates for the position.
Later reports on Wednesday confirmed that an agreement had been reached, with the KNVB finally confirming that they had appointed Xavi through 2030. The Dutch federation’s announcement was subsequently reported as official, with the KNVB formally unveiling the Spaniard.
Xavi returns to management
The appointment gives Xavi his first national-team managerial role.
The 46-year-old has been without a coaching position since leaving Barcelona in 2024. His next challenge will be fundamentally different from managing a club side because he will have considerably less time with his players and will have to build a tactical identity around a group of established Dutch internationals.
Xavi’s managerial reputation was built around the principles that also defined him as one of Barcelona’s greatest midfielders: possession, positional play, technical quality and control of matches through the ball.
Those ideas have strong historical connections with Dutch football.
The Netherlands has traditionally been associated with attacking football, positional intelligence and the development of technically gifted players. That philosophical connection is one reason Xavi’s candidacy appealed to the KNVB. De Telegraaf’s reporting identified his footballing philosophy as an important factor in the discussions.
Xavi’s appointment would also create an intriguing repeat of history.
Ronald Koeman, the man Xavi is replacing, was previously Barcelona’s head coach before Xavi took over at Camp Nou in 2021.
Koeman subsequently returned to the Netherlands job, while Xavi succeeded him at Barcelona.
Now the roles have effectively reversed again.
Koeman’s second spell as Netherlands manager ended following the 2026 World Cup, prompting the KNVB to begin searching for a successor. The Dutch federation had considered several candidates, including Roberto Martínez and Michael Reiziger, before Xavi emerged as the preferred option.
Why Xavi was attractive to the Netherlands
The Netherlands possess a talented generation of players capable of fitting Xavi’s footballing philosophy.
The squad contains established stars such as Virgil van Dijk, Frenkie de Jong, Ryan Gravenberch, Tijjani Reijnders, Cody Gakpo and Denzel Dumfries, alongside younger players who have already gained significant international experience.
The official Oranje records show the depth of the squad that Koeman had assembled before the World Cup, with players from major European clubs forming the core of the national team.
For Xavi, the Netherlands job therefore provides an opportunity to work with technically gifted players without having to oversee a lengthy club rebuild.
His challenge will be turning that individual quality into a cohesive international team.
One of the most intriguing aspects of the appointment is Xavi’s reported desire to include Dutch legend Patrick Kluivert in his coaching staff.
Kluivert would bring extensive knowledge of Dutch football and international experience to Xavi’s team.
The former Ajax and Barcelona striker represented the Netherlands 79 times and scored 40 international goals. He also worked as an assistant to Louis van Gaal during the Netherlands’ successful 2014 World Cup campaign, when Oranje finished third.
That experience could be particularly valuable to Xavi.
Rather than arriving in the Netherlands with an entirely Spanish coaching team, the former Barcelona manager would have a highly respected Dutch football figure alongside him who understands the country’s football culture and the expectations surrounding the national team.
