ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The Rotterdam man who admitted to driving drunk in a fatal crash was sentenced on Friday. Matthew Merriman, 30, will serve six and two-thirds to 20 years in state prison.
Merriman pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide in June.

Around 5:45 p.m. on September 30, 2025, Merriman was involved in a crash near the I-90 exit ramp on Everett Road in the city of Albany. Matthew Mardon, 34, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Merriman was taken to Albany Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries. He was later taken into custody by police, and his blood alcohol content was above 0.18%. The investigation showed Merriman ran a red light and crashed into Mardon.
Several of Mardon’s family and friends were in attendance at the sentencing. A victim impact statement from Mardon’s mother, Susan, was also read in court, saying in-part: “My Matt was everything. You, Mr. Merriman, are not. Words that come to mind when I think of you are: Selfish, immature, and thoughtless. I believe you have no regard for others. Over the last 10 months, you have shown no remorse or sympathy for what you have done.”
