The statement by the South African Ministry of Foreign Affairs also referred to the catastrophic human losses in Gaza. According to the document, as of August (Asad) of this year, at least 73,407 Palestinians have been martyred and 174,335 have been injured, which constitutes “more than 10 percent of the Palestinian population.” Also, since the announcement of the so-called “ceasefire,” an average of one Palestinian child has been killed by Israeli soldiers every day, and the number of abortions among Palestinian women has more than tripled in 2026.
Background: On December 29, 2023, South Africa filed a complaint against the Zionist regime at the International Court of Justice, citing the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide. The Hague Court subsequently issued binding provisional measures to prevent the genocide in Gaza in three separate stages on 26 January, 28 March and 24 May 2024. However, South Africa believes that the Israeli regime has not yet complied with these rulings and, by filing this new case, is calling for urgent action to ensure full implementation of the Court’s orders.
