Global automotive semiconductor major NXP Semiconductors is exploring the feasibility of setting up a research and development centre in Mohali, following a meeting between Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and top NXP leadership in the Netherlands on Monday.
NXP Semiconductors is a leading global semiconductor company headquartered at Eindhoven in the Netherlands, specialising in secure connectivity solutions for embedded applications with a major focus on the automotive, industrial, IoT and mobile markets. Founded in 2006 as a spin-off from Philips, it provides specialised chips, power management and sensors to over 30 countries.
Flanked by Punjab’s Industries, Commerce, Investment Promotion, Local Government and Power Minister Sanjeev Arora, the Chief Minister met NXP Executive Director and Country Manager (Netherlands) Maurice Geraets and Head of Public Policy Dr Ankit Pal, pitching Mohali as a prime location for the Dutch multinational’s R&D footprint in India while citing the city’s strong talent pool and its rapidly emerging electronics system design ecosystem.
The CM also apprised the NXP delegation of the state government’s plans to develop a Silicon Valley-like ecosystem at Kalkat Bhawan, Mohali — strategically located near the international airport and IT City.
NXP leadership has been invited to visit Punjab to assess collaborative opportunities on the ground.
Discussions also covered a potential tie-up on the NXP Startup Challenge Programme in partnership with Startup Punjab, aimed at nurturing startups and co-developing advanced technology solutions. The CM further pushed for collaboration in Near Field Communication (NFC), Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), and secure connectivity technologies — areas aligned with Punjab’s growing automotive and auto-components ecosystem.
CM Mann highlighted Mohali’s proximity to premier academic institutions — IIT-Ropar, ISB Mohali, Plaksha University, Punjab Engineering College and Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology — as a ready pipeline for high-quality research and engineering talent.
The CM also showcased ongoing investment activity in the region, including Infosys at IT City, Mohali, and the capacity augmentation of the Semi-Conductor Laboratory (SCL), Mohali, being undertaken with the involvement of the Tata Group under the Government of India’s semiconductor mission.
Mann pointed to the recently launched Industrial and Business Development Policy (IBDP) 2026, under which electronics and semiconductors have been identified as thrust sectors with incentives of up to 125% of fixed capital investment.
During the discussions, the NXP highlighted its extensive India presence with a focus on R&D, embedded systems and automotive semiconductor solutions, and shared insights on global trends in intelligent edge systems, automotive electronics, IoT and secured connectivity.
