ASML Holding (NASDAQ: ASML), the Dutch semiconductor equipment giant, broke ground on September 8 on a new production site spanning approximately 35 hectares near Eindhoven. The move aims to expand production capacity for EUV (extreme ultraviolet) lithography systems, which have been under strain amid surging demand driven by artificial intelligence. Investors welcomed the development as an aggressive bet on sustained semiconductor demand, with shares closing up roughly 2% at $1,751.66 (approximately ¥270,000).

The new project, named “BIC North,” will be built on undeveloped land adjacent to Eindhoven Airport, about 7 kilometers from Veldhoven, where the company’s headquarters and primary production facilities are located. Chief Executive Officer Christophe Fouquet said in a statement: “Growing global demand from the semiconductor industry requires continued investment.”

The first phase is scheduled for completion in 2029 and will provide workspace for at least 3,000 employees. At full development, the site is planned to accommodate up to 20,000 workers across 350,000 square meters of floor space. The centerpiece will be a “flow factory” that consolidates materials procurement, manufacturing, and installation processes for the company’s TWINSCAN lithography systems under a single roof, enabling the massive machines to be assembled more quickly and efficiently.

ASML shipped 86 new lithography systems in the second quarter, a sharp 28.4% increase from the previous quarter. Management has set a target of boosting low-NA (numerical aperture) EUV production capacity by 30% by 2027.

While the new plant strengthens the company’s long-term supply capacity credentials, it will not immediately resolve near-term production bottlenecks. Until operations begin in 2029, existing factories and suppliers will need to continue handling customer demand for the next three years.

ASML shares are trading 40.87% above the GF Value estimate of approximately $1,240 (around ¥190,000), a metric used to gauge the company’s fundamental valuation, indicating that growth expectations are already priced in. The groundbreaking of the new facility underscores the company’s view that demand for advanced lithography systems will expand structurally as long as the AI boom persists.
