Stellantis continues to expand its global footprint and EV strategy by bringing a new, practical solution to meet Europe’s growing demand for affordable electric commercial vehicles. This time, the focus is on Italy, where the company has transformed the compact Leapmotor T03 city car into a fully functional light commercial vehicle (LCV) aimed at urban professionals.

At first glance, the Leapmotor T03 Van doesn’t stray far from its passenger-car roots and that’s exactly the point. Stellantis has taken the existing T03 platform and reworked it into a purpose-built work vehicle without overcomplicating things. The result is a small, all-electric van that keeps costs low while delivering real-world usability for businesses operating in tight city environments.

The biggest change comes inside. The rear seats are gone, replaced by a dedicated cargo area designed for everyday work needs. That space offers up to 657 liters (23.2 cubic feet) of storage, making it ideal for delivery services, maintenance crews, or small-business owners who need a compact, efficient hauler.
Because the T03 was already designed as a city-friendly vehicle, its small footprint becomes a major advantage in commercial form. It’s easy to maneuver through narrow streets, tight alleys, and crowded urban centers—something larger vans often struggle with. For professionals working in dense cities like Turin or Milan, that’s a big deal.

Powering the T03 Van is a fully electric drivetrain capable of delivering up to 256 km (159 miles) of range on the WLTP cycle. While that might not sound like much compared to larger EVs, it’s more than enough for typical daily routes in urban environments.
The benefits go beyond the range. Running costs are significantly lower than traditional gas-powered vans, and operators can access restricted traffic zones, something that’s becoming increasingly important across European cities. For businesses trying to cut costs while staying compliant with emissions regulations, this kind of vehicle hits a sweet spot.
Well-Equipped for Daily Use

Unlike many entry-level commercial vehicles, the T03 Van doesn’t feel stripped down. Stellantis has kept much of the original car’s technology intact, meaning drivers still have access to modern connectivity, safety systems, and driver-assistance features.
That includes features designed to reduce fatigue during long workdays, improve safety in stop-and-go traffic, and keep drivers connected while on the job. It’s a reminder that even a budget-friendly work vehicle doesn’t have to feel barebones.

One of the more interesting aspects of the T03 Van is how it comes together. The base vehicle is built in China, leveraging Leapmotor’s production capabilities. From there, it’s shipped to Italy, where Stellantis completes the final transformation into the LCV version at its Mirafiori facility.
This approach allows Stellantis to balance cost efficiency with local quality control. By handling the final conversion in Italy, the company ensures the vehicle meets European standards while also tailoring it to local business needs.
A Missed Opportunity for Fiat?
What stands out to me here is that Stellantis chose this route instead of leveraging one of its existing products. The Mirafiori Assembly Plant already builds the Fiat 500e, and with hybrid variants returning, it seems like a natural candidate for a similar light-commercial conversion.
Now, to be fair, when you look at the numbers, you can see why Stellantis leaned toward the Leapmotor T03 as the better base for a small utility vehicle. While the Fiat 500e is slightly wider, the T03 is taller and offers more interior headroom and a more usable cargo area.
Here’s how they stack up (approximate figures):
Length: Nearly identical — 3,620 mm (142.5 inches) for the T03 vs. 3,632 mm (143.0 inches) for the 500e
Height: T03 is taller at 1,577 mm (62.1 inches) vs. 1,527 mm (60.1 inches) for the 500e
Width: 500e is slightly wider at 1,683 mm (66.3 inches) vs. 1,652 mm (65.0 inches) for the T03
Cargo Space: T03 offers 210 liters (7.4 cubic feet) vs. 185 liters (6.5 cubic feet) in the 500e
On top of that, the Leapmotor T03 features a five-door layout, compared to the Fiat 500e’s traditional three-door setup. That alone makes a big difference when you’re talking about daily usability, especially for loading and unloading cargo in tight urban environments.
So yes, from a packaging and practicality standpoint, it makes sense that the T03 is the more flexible platform for a light commercial vehicle.
But even with that in mind, it still feels like Fiat is missing an opportunity here. Stellantis has the manufacturing footprint, brand recognition, and heritage right there at Mirafiori. Instead, it continues to open the door wider for Leapmotor to gain traction in Europe.
From a cost and scalability standpoint, the move is understandable. From a brand strategy standpoint, though, it raises some real questions.
A Budget-Friendly Entry Into Electric Work Vehicles

Perhaps the most compelling part of the T03 Van is its pricing. With a starting cost of €14,590 (before VAT and on-road fees) or roughly $17,000 USD, it positions itself as one of the most accessible electric commercial vehicles on the market.
That pricing strategy is key. As businesses face rising costs and stricter emissions rules, affordable EV options are becoming essential. The T03 Van lowers the barrier to entry, making it easier for small businesses and fleet operators to transition to electric mobility without a massive upfront investment.
A Smart Move for Urban Mobility

With the launch of the Leapmotor T03 Van, Stellantis is clearly targeting a niche that’s only going to grow, compact, efficient, and affordable electric work vehicles for city use. It may not be flashy, but it’s practical, cost-effective, and purpose-built for the job.
Still, it also highlights how much untapped potential remains within Stellantis’ own portfolio.
