Discussions around work-life balance have become increasingly common in recent years, especially as more professionals share their experiences of working across different countries and cultures. While long working hours and blurred personal boundaries are often associated with many corporate environments, some European workplaces are frequently described as more structured in separating professional and personal life.

A recent viral video by an Indian woman working in the Netherlands has highlighted how Dutch employees approach work with strict focus during office hours and complete disconnection after work ends.

Indian Professional Shares Her Experience
The woman, Aditi, spoke about her experience in a video shared on Instagram, where she explained how working in the Netherlands has changed her outlook towards jobs and daily routine. She also clarified that this is her only international work experience, making it her baseline for comparison.
“Working in the Netherlands has really changed me fundamentally as a person. FYI, I have not worked in any other country so this is my only baseline. Generally, people here are very serious and very chill about work. Okay let me explain. You might already know, but we’re very big supporters of work-life balance. What that means is when we’re working during the day, we’re actually only working. We’re focused, we’re punctual, and we’re actually present in our work,” she said.

Her comments underline a workplace environment where employees are expected to be fully present and efficient during office hours without mixing personal distractions into work time.

Focused Work Culture During Office HoursAditi explained that people in the Netherlands tend to take their jobs seriously while they are at work. According to her, the expectation is not just presence in the office but active engagement in tasks.
She noted that punctuality and focus are key parts of the system, with employees generally treating work hours as dedicated time for productivity rather than multitasking or informal breaks extending throughout the day.
A major point she highlighted was the clear mental separation between work and personal life once office hours end. She said that most people completely switch off from work-related thoughts after leaving the office.

“But when it’s time to chill and let go of work and the life component starts, we forget everything about work as well. Well, most of us do. We maintain clear boundaries between what it means to work seriously, of course, and what it means to have a good balanced life. So every day I can disconnect from work and spend time with my loved ones, with my friends, and focus on my health and my well-being and actually chill,” she added.

According to her, this separation allows individuals to focus on relationships, health, and personal recovery without carrying professional stress into their personal time.
