{"id":10787,"date":"2026-05-12T11:04:34","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T11:04:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/netherlands\/10787\/"},"modified":"2026-05-12T11:04:34","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T11:04:34","slug":"venezuela-insists-essequibo-region-of-neighboring-guyana-was-fraudulently-taken","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/netherlands\/10787\/","title":{"rendered":"Venezuela insists Essequibo region of neighboring Guyana was fraudulently taken"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) \u2014 Venezuela insisted Wednesday that a disputed mineral-rich region of Guyana was fraudulently taken in a 19th-century example of colonialism, arguing that a 1966 agreement and not the United Nations\u2019 highest court should finalize ownership of the territory.<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/international-court-of-justice\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">International Court of Justice<\/a> is holding a week of hearings between the South American neighbors who both lay claim to the Essequibo region, which is rich in gold, diamonds, timber and other natural resources and is located close to <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/guyana-oil-discovery-money-14c23a72c6d7c13675493ede42ed1000\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">massive offshore oil deposits<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>An 1899 decision by arbitrators from Britain, Russia and the United States drew the border along the Essequibo River largely in favor of Guyana. The U.S. represented Venezuela in part because the Venezuelan government had broken off diplomatic relations with Britain. Venezuela contends that the Americans and Europeans conspired to cheat the country out of its rightfully owned land.<\/p>\n<p>Venezuela has considered Essequibo as its own since the Spanish colonial period when the jungle-draped region was within its boundaries. The country argues a 1966 agreement sealed in Geneva to resolve the dispute effectively nullified the 19th-century arbitration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGuyana presents itself as the true, legitimate heir to British and Dutch territories, but the reality is that it is the beneficiary of colonial dispossession, formalized through fraudulent arbitration.
