{"id":11455,"date":"2026-05-14T11:05:09","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T11:05:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/netherlands\/11455\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T11:05:09","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T11:05:09","slug":"oda-skyscraper-nears-completion-atop-old-post-office-in-rotterdam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/netherlands\/11455\/","title":{"rendered":"ODA skyscraper nears completion atop old post office in Rotterdam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>    <img style=\"width: 100%; height: auto; display: block;\" loading=\"eager\" fetchpriority=\"high\" width=\"852\" height=\"479\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/netherlands\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/post-oda-architecture-skyscraper-adaptive-reuse-rotterdam-netherlands_dezeen_2364_hero-852x479.jpg\" class=\"attachment-article_large_image size-article_large_image nolazy\" alt=\"Post skyscraper by ODA\" decoding=\"async\"  data-pin-nopin=\"true\"\/>    <\/p>\n<p>A 150-metre-high <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/skyscrapers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">skyscraper<\/a> punctuated by arched windows is nearing completion in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/Rotterdam\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rotterdam<\/a>, designed by New York studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/ODA\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ODA<\/a> as part of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/adaptive-reuse\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">adaptive reuse<\/a> project involving an old post office.<\/p>\n<p>Aptly named Post, the skyscraper sits above the historic building, which was built in 1916 in the port city&#8217;s Coolsingel district.<\/p>\n<p>In the exclusive photos taken by local photographer <a href=\"https:\/\/andrewcampionphotography.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andrew Campion<\/a>, the 43-storey tower&#8217;s arched windows are seen in a mix of sizes and with deep tiled reveals.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2326651 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/netherlands\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/post-oda-architecture-skyscraper-adaptive-reuse-rotterdam-netherlands_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x1278.jpg\" alt=\"Post skyscraper by ODA\" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The Post skyscraper is nearing completion in Rotterdam<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/oda\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ODA<\/a> is overhauling the 58,000-square-metre post office with local studio <a href=\"https:\/\/braaksmaroos.nl\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Braaksma &amp; Roos Architectenbureau<\/a> for the developer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.omnamgroup.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Omnam Group<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The landmark, which has for a long time been vacant, is one of the only structures in the city to survive the Rotterdam Blitz in 1940.<\/p>\n<p>Its overhaul and towering extension will see it transformed into a mixed-use complex.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2326661 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/netherlands\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/post-oda-architecture-skyscraper-adaptive-reuse-rotterdam-netherlands_dezeen_2364_hero-852x479.jpg\" alt=\"Rotterdam skyscraper\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1329\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>It sits atop an old post office dating back to 1916<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2019\/02\/06\/post-oda-rotterdam-post-office\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The project was first revealed in 2019<\/a>. At the time, ODA&#8217;s executive director Eran Chen said the project would represent &#8220;the strength of Rotterdam today&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We believe that it&#8217;s time for the Post to stand not only as a memory, but also as an expression of the strength of Rotterdam today as a vibrant, connected, centre of culture, renewal, and quality of life,&#8221; said Chen.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/06\/05\/the-torch-supertall-skyscraper-thrill-ride\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/netherlands\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/the-torch-supertall-skyscraper-new-york-thrill-ride_dezeen_2364_col_0-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"The Torch supertall skyscraper in New York\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> The Torch supertall skyscraper to include thrill ride above Manhattan\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The skyscraper slots within an internal courtyard within the former post office building, elevated on a vaulted plinth. Once complete, it will contain a hotel connected to the upper floors of the post office.<\/p>\n<p>Its facade is designed to echo the spacing of the elevations of the existing building, while setting itself apart from &#8220;the series of glass-facade towers along the new Rotterdam skyline&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2326652 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/netherlands\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/post-oda-architecture-skyscraper-adaptive-reuse-rotterdam-netherlands_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"Post skyscraper by ODA\" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The photos reveal the building&#8217;s arched windows<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the post office&#8217;s original structure will be restored, including its 22.5-metre-high vaulted Great Hall. It will be accessed by two existing street-level entrances and lined with shops, galleries, restaurants and cafes.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere in Rotterdam, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/12\/01\/mvrdv-schieblocks-office-building-rotterdam\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MVRDV is currently designing an office block as &#8220;colourful addition&#8221; to the city<\/a>, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/05\/14\/mad-fenix-museum-rotterdam\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MAD recently completed a pair of giant helical staircases for the Fenix Museum of Migration<\/a> that acts as &#8220;living room for people&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The photography is by Andrew Campion.<\/p>\n<p>                New!
