This dispute has persisted for over a century and revolves around a territory of nearly 62,000 square miles that is abundant in gold, diamonds, timber, and has proximity to substantial offshore oil reserves.

Venezuela asserts that the Essequibo region has been under its jurisdiction since the Spanish colonial era, believing it to be an integral part of its national boundaries. The controversy escalated after an 1899 arbitration ruling, involving representatives from Britain, Russia, and the United States, which largely favored Guyana by delineating the border along the Essequibo River. Venezuela, however, contends that a 1966 Geneva agreement aimed at resolving the dispute effectively nullifies the earlier arbitration decision, thus bringing the territory back into its historical claim.

Rodríguez’s participation comes as the ICJ conducts a series of hearings, culminating in a final session scheduled for Monday. After arriving at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, Rodríguez emphasized her nation’s historical connection to the territory, stating, “We have demonstrated at every historical stage what our territory has meant since we were born as a Republic.”

The case was brought to the ICJ by Guyana in 2018, seeking clarity on the legitimacy of the 1899 ruling, which it argues should define the border. During the opening of the hearings, Guyanese Foreign Minister Hugh Hilton Todd conveyed the significance of the dispute to his nation. He remarked that the issue has been a detrimental factor for Guyana’s sovereignty and highlighted that approximately 70% of the country’s territory is involved in the claim.

While Venezuela participates in the hearings, it maintains that this does not constitute an acknowledgment of the ICJ’s jurisdiction over the matter. The proceedings are expected to take some time, with the court likely to deliberate for several months before issuing a final, legally binding judgment.

In a significant development in the long-standing territorial dispute between Venezuela and Guyana, Delcy Rodríguez, acting President of…

[5
42
0":"post-11518","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-the-hague","8":"tag-the-hague
["GET
