{"id":12029,"date":"2026-05-16T01:07:05","date_gmt":"2026-05-16T01:07:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/netherlands\/12029\/"},"modified":"2026-05-16T01:07:05","modified_gmt":"2026-05-16T01:07:05","slug":"2-people-critically-injured-after-driver-jumps-curb-on-upper-west-side","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/netherlands\/12029\/","title":{"rendered":"2 people critically injured after driver jumps curb on Upper West Side"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two people died and three were critically injured after a 61-year-old driver plowed his Mercedes-Benz into a crowd of pedestrians on Manhattan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2026\/04\/27\/nyc-withdraws-plans-to-open-ai-focused-high-school-and-close-uws-middle-schools\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Upper West Side<\/a> Friday, cops said.<\/p>\n<p>The driver was heading north on Amsterdam Ave. in his black GLC 300 SUV when he lost control near W. 109th St. around 6 p.m., according to law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>The Mercedes slammed into a silver Volkswagen Jetta, careened into a bronze Chevy Astro and then mounted the sidewalk, according to witnesses.<\/p>\n<p>A nearby resident watched from her window overlooking the scene as the horror unfolded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were two men lying on the ground. Another man was giving one of them CPR. Someone was screaming, \u2018We need an ambulance! Where are the ambulances?&#8217;\u201d Jaime Cunningham, 49, told the Daily News.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was awful,\u201d she added. \u201cThe black car, the Mercedes, was going fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A woman dining at a nearby restaurant said the driver slammed into a cyclist before mounting the sidewalk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a loud impact,\u201d said Marilyn Williams. \u201cMy husband ran over and he came back pretty upset. He said there was one person trapped beneath the black car and there was a young cyclist who was riding in the bike lane who was hit and thrown onto the sidewalk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome local people were trying to give him CPR, but it didn\u2019t seem to be working.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Medics rushed five injured pedestrians, all men, to local hospitals in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2026\/05\/14\/lance-garcia-trapped-inwood-apartment-building-fire-died-saving-others-including-mom\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">critical condition<\/a>, where two of them died, police said.<\/p>\n<p>The driver remained at the scene.
