{"id":12607,"date":"2026-05-16T22:45:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-16T22:45:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/netherlands\/12607\/"},"modified":"2026-05-16T22:45:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-16T22:45:08","slug":"driver-in-upper-west-side-crash-charged-with-dwi-manslaughter-after-pedestrians-deaths-nypd-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/netherlands\/12607\/","title":{"rendered":"Driver in Upper West Side crash charged with DWI, manslaughter after pedestrians&#8217; deaths, NYPD says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A New York City man is facing DWI and manslaughter charges after crashing into multiple parked cars and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/upper-west-side-fatal-crash-109th-street-amsterdam-ave\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fatally striking pedestrians<\/a> on the Upper West Side, police said on Saturday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The NYPD said Elvin Suarez, 61, was driving northbound Friday evening on Amsterdam Ave. when his 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 SUV veered over a concrete island and struck four pedestrians near West 109th St.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Suarez then crashed into a parked Chevrolet van, causing what police called &#8220;a chain reaction collision&#8221; involving four more cars: a 2005 Honda CR-V, 2001 Toyota Sienna, 2005 Toyota 4Runner, and 2014 Nissan Altima. He had already collided with a parked 2013 Volkswagen Jetta SUV approximately 40 feet before the 109th St. intersection, but did not stop, police said.<\/p>\n<p>      <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets2.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2026\/05\/16\/0ebb7322-ff44-4d9b-ba4f-02b509fef25f\/thumbnail\/620x349\/3c0afa78169d72c770e507a2fcdc0d8a\/uws-multiple-peds-struck-ag-hi-res-still-20-30-4202.jpg#\" alt=\"uws-multiple-peds-struck-ag-hi-res-still-20-30-4202.jpg \" height=\"349\" width=\"620\" class=\" lazyload\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>                CBS News New York<\/p>\n<p>A man inside the Chevrolet van, the pedestrians, and Suarez were taken to Mount Sinai Morningside hospital, police said. Two of the pedestrians &#8212; 46-year-old Jason Negron, of Manhattan, and 35-year-old Michael Saint-Hilaire, of Manhattan &#8212; were pronounced dead, and the other four were in stable condition, police said.<\/p>\n<p>Eva Santiago, a witness to the crash, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/video\/witnesses-describe-chaos-as-driver-plows-into-upper-west-side-pedestrians\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told CBS News New York<\/a> she saw the driver &#8220;was just swerving, driving really fast, and then he drove up over the median.
