Following the regulatory approval<\/a> of Full Self-Driving (Supervised) in the Netherlands, Tesla is introducing a new prerequisite for drivers. Before taking the advanced driver assistance system out on European roads for the first time, Dutch owners will now be required to pass a mandatory safety quiz in the vehicle.<\/p>\n

This new FSD (Supervised) Activation Tutorial is designed to ensure that every driver fully understands the capabilities and the strict limitations of the software before it is ever engaged.<\/p>\n

Inside the Activation Tutorial<\/p>\n

Seen in a video shared by Tesla Europe, the mandatory quiz pops up directly on your vehicle\u2019s primary display when you attempt to activate FSD for the first time.<\/p>\n

The tutorial is concise but highly targeted, currently featuring a simple two-question quiz that owners must complete and submit. However, most importantly, it carefully explains what each button does while you\u2019re on FSD.<\/p>\n

Based on the initial rollout, the quiz focuses on two critical areas of understanding. The first is for visual identification of when FSD is running. The first question asks the driver to “Select the image where FSD (Supervised) is active.” It presents two side-by-side UI visualizations.\u00a0<\/p>\n

One shows standard lane lines, while the correct option clearly displays the blue steering wheel icon and the solid blue path projecting out from the vehicle. This ensures the driver knows exactly when the car is in control versus when it is in a standby state.<\/p>\n

FSD controls and UI haven\u2019t always been clear. We\u2019ve noted before that Tesla should provide a clear banner across the top when FSD is active, however, this helps drivers at least know what to look for to determine whether FSD is active.<\/p>\n

The second is for driver accountability, asking, “Are you responsible for safe vehicle operation while FSD (Supervised) is active?” Drivers must explicitly select “Yes” to proceed.<\/p>\n

Satisfying Regulatory Requirements<\/p>\n

While a two-question quiz might seem simple, it is a required step for Tesla. The European Union has incredibly strict safety frameworks, and the Netherlands approval was granted under the UN R-171 Level 2 DCAS (Driver Control Assistance Systems) regulation.<\/p>\n

A core component of Level 2 systems is that the human driver remains the ultimate authority and bears full responsibility for the vehicle’s actions. By forcing a mandatory, on-screen acknowledgment of this responsibility, Tesla is proactively proving to regulators that it is taking driver education seriously.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It explicitly reinforces the “Supervised” moniker that Tesla added to the FSD\u2019s full title, helping mitigate the risk of driver complacency as the system rolls out to a brand new continent of users.<\/p>\n

Following the landmark regulatory approval <\/a>by the Dutch vehicle authority (RDW) just yesterday, Tesla has officially launched its Full Self-Driving (Supervised) subscription in the Netherlands. This marks the first time the monthly payment model has been available in Europe.\u00a0<\/p>\n

While Tesla has ended FSD purchases<\/a> in North America, it is still available in Europe. The new FSD subscription simply offers owners more options. However, expect this to change in the near future.<\/p>\n

Immediate Availability and Functionality<\/p>\n

The subscription is currently available for both AI4 (Hardware 4) and Hardware 3 vehicles. However, there is a small technical nuance to the immediate rollout.<\/p>\n

For most customers subscribing today, your subscription will immediately activate the features of Enhanced Autopilot if you do not already have them. However, you may not receive FSD right away, as Tesla is slowly rolling it out with update 2026.2.6 on HW4 vehicles.<\/p>\n

The Netherlands serves as Tesla\u2019s European headquarters, and the RDW has a long-standing relationship<\/a> with Tesla\u2019s autonomy engineers. The release notes for the Dutch rollout emphasize that FSD can now “drive your Tesla almost anywhere. It will start from a parked position, make lane changes, select forks to follow your navigation route, navigate around other vehicles and objects, make left and right turns, and stop at your destination.” While FSD v14.3<\/a> is the latest version in North America, owners in the Netherlands are receiving a slightly different version. In the Netherlands, Tesla is rolling out FSD 14.2.2.5, presumably the version tested with the Dutch authorities and likely tailored for the European market<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Unique Requirements for Dutch Drivers<\/p>\n

Because of the strict local laws, the European experience includes several unique UI features and safety indicators<\/a> not seen in other regions. One of the most significant hurdles for new users is a mandatory educational component. The release notes state: “To use the feature, first watch the tutorial and take the quiz, available in the new Self-Driving App or in Control > Self-Driving.”<\/p>\n

Tesla is clearly being cautious with this expansion, reminding drivers that the system “does not make your vehicle autonomous. Do not become complacent.” By requiring a quiz, the company ensures that users understand the “Supervised” nature of the software, stressing that they must remain fully attentive and ready to take over at any moment.<\/p>\n

A New Era for Global Expansion<\/p>\n

The arrival of FSD in the Netherlands is a massive win for Tesla\u2019s global roadmap<\/a>.
