It remained in the van Gogh family until 1962, when, with the help of the government of the Netherlands, Vincent Willem van Gogh, the artist\u2019s nephew, donated the collection to the Vincent van Gogh Foundation. The foundation then gave the collection to the Van Gogh Museum on permanent loan. The museum <a class=\"md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off eb\" data-term=\"augmented\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/dictionary\/augmented\" data-type=\"EB\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">augmented<\/a> it with works acquired through purchase and donation. In addition to van Gogh\u2019s work, the museum exhibits work by his contemporaries, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Paul-Gauguin\" class=\"md-crosslink \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paul Gauguin<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Mary-Cassatt\" class=\"md-crosslink \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mary Cassatt<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Henri-de-Toulouse-Lautrec\" class=\"md-crosslink \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec<\/a>, as well as paintings by older artists whom van Gogh admired, most notably L\u00e9on Lhermitte and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Jean-Francois-Millet-French-painter-1814-1875\" class=\"md-crosslink \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Millet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\tQuick Facts<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tDate:<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t1973 &#8211; present<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t(Show\u00a0more)<\/p>\n<p class=\"topic-paragraph\">The Van Gogh Museum opened in 1973 in a building designed by Dutch architect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Gerrit-Thomas-Rietveld\" class=\"md-crosslink \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gerrit Rietveld<\/a>, a member of the progressive art movement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/De-Stijl-art\" class=\"md-crosslink \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">De Stijl<\/a> in between the World Wars. In 1999 the museum opened a new exhibition wing that designed by the Japanese architect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Kisho-Kurokawa\" class=\"md-crosslink \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kurokawa Kisho<\/a>. Both buildings have an open design that emphasizes geometrical forms and allows much natural light into the exhibition space.
