(EPA Images pic)<br \/>\nTHE HAGUE: In a first for Europe, the Netherlands is poised to allow Tesla owners to use their car\u2019s self-driving feature \u2013 as long as they are in the vehicle and keeping a watchful eye over it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"py-1.5 mb-4 text-lg\">The country\u2019s RDW agency for roadworthiness certifications said in a statement late Friday: \u201cThanks to the type approval, the driver assistance system can now be used in the Netherlands, with possible future expansion to all member states of the EU\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"py-1.5 mb-4 text-lg\">The move aligns the Netherlands with what is allowed in the US, where Tesla owners can already use the Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised (FSD Supervised) function in the cars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"py-1.5 mb-4 text-lg\">That mode hands over driving to the Tesla\u2019s computer system, including steering, braking, route navigation and parking, all under the active supervision of the driver, who remains at the controls ready to take over if needed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"py-1.5 mb-4 text-lg\">The European subsidiary of Tesla, the electric-vehicle company run by the world\u2019s richest person, Elon Musk, hailed the Netherlands\u2019 move.<\/p>\n<p class=\"py-1.5 mb-4 text-lg\">\u201cFSD Supervised has been approved in the Netherlands &amp; will begin rolling out in the country shortly!\u201d it said on X.<\/p>\n<p class=\"py-1.5 mb-4 text-lg\">\u201cNo other vehicle can do this. We\u2019re excited to bring FSD Supervised to more European countries soon,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"py-1.5 mb-4 text-lg\">The Dutch RDW agency stressed the difference between FSD Supervised, with a human remaining at the controls, and full autonomous driving.<\/p>\n<p class=\"py-1.5 mb-4 text-lg\">\u201cA vehicle with FSD Supervised is not self-driving. It is a driver assistance system, and the driver remains responsible and must always maintain control,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"py-1.5 mb-4 text-lg\">RDW\u2019s decision has to go to the European Commission for authorisation, so that its national certification has EU weight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"py-1.5 mb-4 text-lg\">Tesla sales have been facing headwinds in Europe \u2013 including in the Netherlands \u2013 in the last couple of years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"py-1.5 mb-4 text-lg\">Potential clients have turned off by Musk\u2019s political activism supporting hard-right politics in the US and Germany, while the brand is also facing increased competition from Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Tesla sales have faced headwinds in Europe, including in the Netherlands, over the past couple of years.
