BERLIN, June 9 (Reuters) – A group of defence companies led by Airbus has submitted a position \u200cpaper on a sixth-generation fighter jet project to \u200cthe German government, signalling an industry push to shape Europe’s future \u200bcombat jet programme amid uncertainty about its direction.<\/p>\n
The group, dubbed “Team Gen 6”, comprises Airbus Defence and Space, Autoflug, Diehl Defence, Hensoldt, Liebherr, MBDA, MTU Aero Engines and Rohde & \u200cSchwarz.<\/p>\n
The companies drafted the \u2060paper outlining their potential contribution to the Future Combat Air System (FCAS), a Hensoldt spokesperson \u2060said.<\/p>\n
The Financial Times first reported the paper.<\/p>\n
Industry sources said the move did not amount to an attempt to launch \u200ba new \u200bfighter project following the \u200bcollapse of a Franco-German \u200cflagship effort to develop a next-generation combat jet.<\/p>\n
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said on Tuesday that problems surrounding FCAS had been evident “for quite some time” and that Berlin had already been holding talks with stakeholders for months \u200cabout future options. He declined \u200bto comment on leadership or next \u200bsteps.<\/p>\n
The defence ministry \u200bconfirmed receipt of the paper but declined \u200cto comment. Diehl said it \u200baimed to contribute \u200bweapons systems to any sixth-generation jet but gave no further details. MBDA declined to comment, while the \u200bother companies \u200cand the German chancellery did not respond to \u200brequests for comment.<\/p>\n
