THE HAGUE, June 15 (Reuters) – An international court found that Russia flouted some sea laws during the \u200cconstruction of the Kerch Strait bridge between mainland Russia \u200cand annexed Crimea, but dismissed Ukraine’s claims that Moscow was unlawfully trying \u200bto keep the strait under its sole control, a ruling published on Monday showed.<\/p>\n
\u2022 The case at the Hague-based intergovernmental Permanent Court of Arbitration was filed in 2016 after Moscow began \u200cbuilding the 19-km (12-mile) Crimea Bridge \u2060link to the peninsula.<\/p>\n
\u2022 In a ruling dated April 22 but only announced on Monday, as \u2060per the arbitration court’s procedures, the court dismissed the majority of Kyiv’s claims about Russia’s control over the strait on procedural \u200bgrounds.<\/p>\n
\u2022 The \u200bcourt did find Russia violated \u200bsome sea laws because \u200cit did not carry out proper environmental assessments during the construction of the bridge.<\/p>\n
\u2022 The five-judge arbitration panel did not award any reparations and ordered both parties to pay their own legal costs for the procedure that lasted a decade.<\/p>\n
\u2022 \u200cThe case is one of several \u200bproceedings at international courts and institutions \u200bKyiv has pressed against \u200bRussia linked to the 2014 annexation of \u200cCrimea and Moscow’s full-scale invasion in \u200b2022.<\/p>\n
\u2022 The \u200bKerch Strait bridge is crucial for the supply of fuel, food and other products to Crimea, where the port \u200bof Sevastopol is \u200cthe historic home base of Russia’s Black Sea \u200bFleet.<\/p>\n
