The disappointment was written all over Gian van Veen<\/a>\u2019s face after his defeat to Michael van Gerwen in the Premier League Darts<\/a>. Speaking to Viaplay, the young Dutchman admitted there was more in it, even though he also saw that his opponent kept him in the match.\u201cYes, of course I\u2019m very disappointed,\u201d Van Veen began speaking after Premier League Darts in Brighton<\/a>. \u201cI think the scoring wasn\u2019t great today, but it was a lot better than in recent weeks.\u201d That suggested a slight step forward in his game, but at the decisive moments he let it slip on the doubles.<\/p>\n

That was exactly where he felt the biggest difference lay. \u201cOn the finishing I\u2019m just letting it go,\u201d he acknowledged. \u201cLook, he helps me a lot in the match. I\u2019m well aware of that, that he misses a lot of chances, which at least allows me to hang in there. But I miss chances to get in front too. And that annoys me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The match was also important in the battle to stay in touch on the table with the play-offs in sight. Van Veen let that opportunity slip. \u201cIt was just an important match today. The connection is a bit gone now,\u201d he concluded realistically.<\/p>\n

Not yet fully recovered from kidney stones<\/p>\n

Besides his game, his physical condition also came up. Van Veen is still dealing with the after-effects of earlier health issues, although he doesn\u2019t want to use that as an excuse. \u201cI feel good,\u201d he emphasized. \u201cBut I do notice my first dart often dips a bit. I\u2019ve just lost some strength and energy.\u201d<\/p>\n

He notices that difference especially on long match days. \u201cLast Saturday at the Euro Tour I had to play the final match of the evening and my energy was completely gone,\u201d he said. \u201cToday it was fine, so it didn\u2019t come down to that. But I\u2019m definitely still recovering.\u201d<\/p>\n

Van Veen had to withdraw from the Premier League three weeks ago due to kidney stones.<\/p>\n

Focus on Rotterdam Ahoy<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, one date is circled in red in his diary: the Premier League night in Rotterdam next week. \u201cThat\u2019s the plan, yes,\u201d Van Veen said about his intention to be fit at the oche. \u201cI\u2019ve got two exhibitions this weekend, which will feel like getting some practice hours in. But rest is very important too.\u201d<\/p>\n

He will therefore deliberately skip the Players Championship events at the start of next week. \u201cI saw my name on the list, but I won\u2019t be there. I\u2019ll stay in the Netherlands on Monday and Tuesday. I\u2019m skipping these. I will play the next two.\u201d<\/p>\n

Everything is geared towards that night: playing in front of a home crowd at Ahoy. His excitement is unmistakable. \u201cI\u2019m really, really looking forward to it, honestly can\u2019t wait,\u201d Van Veen smiled. \u201cI even had a special shirt made for Ahoy. That says it all.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a special moment for the young darter. \u201cYou don\u2019t play in the Netherlands that often, usually only the Euro Tour. But when you play Premier League at Ahoy\u2026 that\u2019s something you really look forward to. When I got the invite, I immediately thought: I get to play at Ahoy.\u201d<\/p>\n
