Two of football&#8217;s most decorated nations have been sent packing from the tournament after <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/sport\/football\/match-reports\/germany-paraguay-world-cup-highlights-37364530\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">losing on penalties to<\/a> <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/sport\/football\/news\/world-cup-2026-paraguay-moment-37058197\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Paraguay<\/a> and <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/sport\/football\/news\/morocco-world-cup-2026-profile-37245927\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Morocco<\/a>, respectively, following 1-1 draws.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Under the previous format, both sides would have cruised into the last 16 after finishing top of their groups. However, this World Cup is unlike any before it, <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/sport\/football\/football-news\/world-cup-format-germany-netherlands-34210226\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">having been expanded from 32 to 48 teams.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It has seen 12 groups, with the top two from each group joined by the eight best third-placed sides in a brand-new round of 32. Paraguay were one of those third-placed qualifiers, making <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/sport\/football\/news\/pressure-nagelsman-shadow-jurgen-klopp-37185363\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Germany<\/a> firm favourites to advance despite their torrid recent record at the tournament, having suffered group-stage exits in both 2018 and 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Paraguay didn&#8217;t merely progress &#8211; they handed Germany their first-ever penalty shootout defeat at a World Cup.
