Heatwave caused about 480 excess deaths in Holland, mainly affecting people aged 80+<\/p>\n

PARIS \u2014 France, the Netherlands and Belgium have recorded \u200b3,700 excess deaths \u200cduring the June heatwave that sent temperatures soaring across Europe, with authorities warning that the numbers are preliminary and could rise.<\/p>\n

Experts have said the heatwave, which lasted \u200bfrom about \u2060June 20 to 28, was the worst recorded in Europe, causing disruption to power generation, damaging infrastructure and overwhelming healthcare systems. The extreme \u200cheat was almost certainly driven by climate change, scientists said.<\/p>\n

There were 2,025 excess deaths recorded in France during the heatwave, with a \u2060particular increase in deaths among people aged over 45, French Health Minister Stephanie Rist told local television on Friday.<\/p>\n

Deaths at home rose 91% between June 22 and 28 compared to the previous week, while \u200bdeaths in nursing homes and healthcare facilities also increased, the country’s public health authority said in a \u200bbulletin.<\/p>\n

“Mortality \u200cwill … be higher than these initial figures suggest,” the authority warned.<\/p>\n

‘Unprecedented\u2019 mortality data<\/p>\n

In Belgium, the Health \u200bMinistry \u2060said on Thursday it had registered excess mortality of about 1,200 deaths between June 18 \u2060and June 29, adding that 530 of the deaths were among people aged 85 or older. People aged under 65 accounted for 180 \u2060of the excess deaths.<\/p>\n

“Such excess mortality during a \u200bheatwave is unprecedented in our country,” the ministry said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Authorities in the Netherlands said the heatwave led to about 480 excess \u200cdeaths, mainly among \u2060the over 80s.<\/p>\n
