Airbus and MTU Aero Engines have announced the formation of a 50\/50 joint venture to develop a hydrogen fuel cell electric propulsion system, as reported by FlightGlobal<\/a>. The new company, expected to be established in 2027, aims to design, certify and produce a zero-emission propulsion engine that can be integrated into the next generation of commercial aircraft.<\/p>\n

The fully electric hydrogen-powered engine represents one of the most promising technological pathways within Airbus’ decarbonization roadmap, complementing the modified gas turbine engines designed for direct hydrogen combustion that are part of the ZEROe program. The key to this technology lies in the fact that fuel cells convert hydrogen into electricity without combustion, generating only water vapor as a byproduct, making them a zero-emission propulsion system in operation.<\/p>\n

MTU Aero Engines, headquartered in Munich, Germany, is one of the world’s leading aero engine manufacturers and a long-standing partner of Airbus on programs such as the Pratt & Whitney GTF, in which MTU holds an 18% stake and is responsible for the high-pressure turbine modules. The German company is also a partner in the Trent 7000 engine program for the Airbus A330neo and has a presence in military engines such as the Eurojet EJ200 for the Eurofighter Typhoon and the development of the GCAP (Global Combat Air Programme). Its expertise in combustion systems, turbines and critical component integration will be key to the development of the hydrogen engine.<\/p>\n

The announcement comes at a time when Airbus has acknowledged that the ZEROe hydrogen aircraft development faces delays of five to ten years compared to the original schedule targeting 2035. The company, however, continues to invest in enabling technologies. The partnership with MTU represents a concrete step toward maturing one of the most critical links in the chain: the propulsion system itself.<\/p>\n

In parallel, Airbus has been working on creating ground-based hydrogen ecosystems through its Hydrogen Hub at Airports<\/a> program, with initiatives such as its partnership with London Gatwick, easyJet and Air Products to develop liquid hydrogen supply and storage infrastructure. It has also signed agreements in Norway and Sweden with Avinor, SAS, Swedavia and Vattenfall to investigate the feasibility of establishing hydrogen infrastructure at Scandinavian airports, as we previously reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In 2025, Airbus acknowledged that technological progress in hydrogen propulsion was slower than expected, postponing its plans until the middle of the next decade<\/a>. However, the joint venture with MTU demonstrates that the European manufacturer is not abandoning hydrogen as an energy vector, but rather committing to a dual approach: direct hydrogen combustion in modified gas turbines (ZEROe) and electric propulsion through fuel cells.<\/p>\n

As for the impact on Latin America, while hydrogen technology does not yet have near-term application horizons, the development of these propulsion systems could define the future of regional fleets.
