Beijing has issued a lengthy critique of the Philippines\u2019 territorial claims in the South China Sea<\/a>, condemning its actions as \u201cunlawful\u201d expansions that pose a \u201cgrave threat\u201d to the post-war global order.<\/p>\n

Wednesday\u2019s report by a Ministry of Natural Resources think tank \u2013 its third within days \u2013 marks the latest move in China\u2019s campaign to reinforce its position in the disputed waters.<\/p>\n

The push underlines Beijing\u2019s rejection of the Philippines\u2019 stance just days before the 10th anniversary of a landmark international tribunal ruling<\/a> that invalidated key elements of China\u2019s claims. China did not take part in the arbitration and does not recognise the ruling.Manila had offered \u201cshifting\u201d justification for its claims over the decades, the China Institute for Marine Affairs (CIMA) in Beijing said in its report, citing successive territorial claims to Scarborough Shoal<\/a> and parts of the Spratly Islands. The features are also claimed by China, which calls them Huangyan Island and the Nansha Islands, respectively.<\/p>\n

Manila\u2019s \u201cattempt \u2026 to extend its territory\u201d to those maritime features was \u201cdevoid of historical and legal foundation\u201d, the 62-page English-language version of the report argued.<\/p>\n
