Inclement weather caused the plane and its approximate 100 passengers to divert two states away. The flight landed in Charleston sometime around 9:30 p.m.

The plane was then directed by ground crews to an overnight parking spot for a quick refuel before setting off again, according to the report. The Charleston Regional Aviation Authority did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

At that same time the Airbus was parking, the Japanese-operated Boeing 787-10 was leaving the North Charleston factory and preparing to take off for a ferry flight that would deliver the plane to Tokyo.

In the dark of night, the crew on The Boeing 787-10 spotted an airliner that appeared closer to their taxing roadway than usual. The pilot told federal investigators he attempted to steer the craft to the right to avoid a possible collision. The flight crew also noted they had no centerline lighting active while on the taxiway.

Moments later, the tip of Boeing aircraft’s portside wing clipped the Breeze Airways craft’s rudder, damaging its vertical stabilizer. Two passengers aboard the parked Airbus suffered minor injuries, according to the report. Pilots aboard the Japanese flight reported they had clearance and direction to use that taxiway. Operations staff at the airport later told investigators they had not been aware of the Boeing plane’s movements.

Breeze pilots told federal authorities that ground crews had directed the plane to the smaller parking spot, that they were unfamiliar with the specific layout in Charleston and that equipment from the ground crew was still sitting in the parking spot. A photo from the accident shows the plane parked on a line and not inside of it.

“Prior to arrival, ground personnel had not cleared the ramp area of equipment and stopped the airplane with the tail beyond the ramp clearance line,” according to the report.

Ground crews contacted the Breeze aircraft shortly before the collision to say they needed to move the plane for the incoming Boeing aircraft, according to the report. The Breeze captain had already turned off the seatbelt sign and was waiting for all passengers to sit back down when the collision occurred.

In a lawsuit, Breeze Airways accused the pilots aboard the Boeing 787-10 of failing to maintain situational awareness and two-way communication on a traffic advisory frequency.

Both jets have since been put back in service, The Post and Courier reported previously.

CHARLESTON — Directions by Charleston International Airport ground crews appeared to be a contributing factor in a taxiway…

[60
90,1166,2466,21180,6571,21181,21182,21178,21179
post-32421","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-airbus","tag-airbus","tag-boeing","tag-boeing-787","tag-boeing-787-deliveries","tag-boeing-787-dreamliner","tag-boeing-787-dreamliner-south-carolina","tag-breeze-airways","tag-charleston","tag-charleston-airport
["GET
