{"id":3505,"date":"2026-04-17T10:21:54","date_gmt":"2026-04-17T10:21:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/netherlands\/3505\/"},"modified":"2026-04-17T10:21:54","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T10:21:54","slug":"we-moved-to-amsterdam-heres-what-its-really-like-raising-children-there","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/netherlands\/3505\/","title":{"rendered":"We moved to Amsterdam \u2013 here\u2019s what it\u2019s really like raising children there"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jeremy Bierbach, an immigration lawyer at Bierbach Advocaten, warns that the Dutch immigration system is <a class=\"ck-custom-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/world-news\/2025\/09\/30\/netherlands-doubles-citizenship-requirements-migrants\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">restrictive for most non-EU citizens<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are work visas which require employers to show they cannot find anyone else in the EU to fill a role, or highly skilled migrant visas for those with a Dutch employer happy to pay the qualifying salary, which is \u20ac5,942 gross per month for someone over 30, or \u20ac4,357 for someone under 30.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a self-employment visa, which requires a business plan that demonstrates a vital need in the Dutch market.<\/p>\n<p>This is evaluated by the Netherlands ministry of economic affairs based on a \u201cscoring system\u201d which rates factors such as financing, education and experience in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p>The US and Japan, however, have friendship treaties with the Netherlands and are exempt from the scoring system, as long as the applicant has just \u20ac4,500 to invest in their business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can be easier if you are a performing or visual artist and are considered important to the cultural life of the Netherlands,\u201d says Bierbach, who is a specialist in artist visas.<\/p>\n<p>He adds that people can also apply for a \u201cstartup visa\u201d, which requires establishing a relationship with one of the facilitators (or mentors) listed on the Netherlands Enterprise Agency and recognised by the Ministry of Economic Affairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey will then help you incubate your business in exchange for equity in it.
