Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) continues to prove that efficiency isn\u2019t just about the vehicles it builds\u2014it\u2019s also about how those vehicles are made. The company\u2019s Windsor Assembly Plant (WAP) in Ontario, Canada, has been recognized with a Canadian Industry Partnership for Energy Conservation (CIPEC) Leadership Award<\/a>, highlighting a major step forward in reducing energy consumption and emissions at one of its most important production facilities.<\/p>\n

Windsor Assembly is best known as the home of the Chrysler Pacifica<\/a>, Pacifica Hybrid<\/a>, and the Dodge Grand Caravan. It\u2019s a high-volume operation where a new minivan rolls off the line roughly every 48 seconds. From start to finish, each vehicle takes about 27 hours to complete, with nearly a third of that time spent in the paint shop\u2014one of the most energy-intensive areas in any automotive plant.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s exactly where FCA\u2019s Energy Management Team focused its efforts.<\/p>\n

After conducting an in-depth onsite study, the team identified several opportunities to improve efficiency within the plant\u2019s chilled water system, which plays a critical role in maintaining temperature and humidity levels for consistent paint application. The system also helps keep equipment cool during production, making it essential to both quality and reliability.<\/p>\n

The solution wasn\u2019t just one change\u2014it was a coordinated set of improvements. Engineers adjusted supply temperature set points, added Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) to existing pumps, removed outdated mechanical flow controls, and implemented smarter system management through Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programming. The entire upgrade was completed in just two weeks.<\/p>\n

The results were immediate and significant. The plant achieved approximately a 30% annual reduction in energy usage tied to the chilled water system alone. Even more impressive, the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is equivalent to the yearly energy consumption of nearly 21 homes.<\/p>\n

According to Plant Manager Michael Brieda<\/a>, the team didn\u2019t just meet expectations\u2014they exceeded them. In the first quarter after implementation, the plant reached 113 percent of its projected energy savings, showing just how effective the strategy has been.<\/p>\n

The award was presented during Natural Resources Canada\u2019s Energy Summit<\/a> in Toronto, recognizing Windsor Assembly as a leader in industrial energy conservation. It\u2019s another example of how FCA is working to balance performance, production, and environmental responsibility.<\/p>\n

For a facility producing vehicles at this scale, even small efficiency gains can have a massive impact. In Windsor\u2019s case, those gains are anything but small.<\/p>\n
