{"id":37625,"date":"2026-08-13T10:01:08","date_gmt":"2026-08-13T10:01:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/netherlands\/37625\/"},"modified":"2026-08-13T10:01:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T10:01:08","slug":"football-soccer-a-son-of-dutch-football-xavi-honoured-to-be-named-netherlands-coach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/netherlands\/37625\/","title":{"rendered":"Football: Soccer-A son of Dutch football: Xavi honoured to be named Netherlands coach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AMSTERDAM, Aug 13 (Reuters) &#8211; The appointment of \u2060Xavi as Netherlands coach late on Wednesday completes an extensive search and brings full circle \u2060the special relationship between Dutch football and Barcelona.<\/p>\n<p>Xavi replaces Ronald Koeman, who quit after the \u200cNetherlands were eliminated from the World Cup in the round of 32 in June.<\/p>\n<p>A World Cup winner with Spain as a player in 2010, Xavi has been out of coaching since leaving Barcelona in 2024, where he spent three seasons in charge. <\/p>\n<p>He \u200bhas signed a four-year contract through the 2030 World Cup \u2060and is the first foreign coach to \u2060take charge of the Dutch since Austrian Ernst Happel at the 1978 World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>The six-week wait for \u2060a \u200ccoach drew criticism from Dutch media, but the country&#8217;s football association received several rejections, including from Arne Slot and Erik ten Hag, before turning to the former Barcelona playmaker.<\/p>\n<p>Xavi had also \u2060succeeded Koeman at Camp Nou in November 2021 and coached Barcelona \u200bto the La Liga title in \u200c2023 before leaving after a run of poor results a year later.<\/p>\n<p>Barcelona\u2019s football philosophy of \u2060dominant possession, short \u200bpassing and quick ball recovery was introduced with the arrival of Rinus Michels as coach and Johan Cruyff as a player, the pair bringing \u2018Total Football\u2019, a philosophy honed at Ajax Amsterdam in the early 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>Cruyff, who later coached \u2060Barcelona, was a major influence on subsequent coaches, particularly Pep \u200bGuardiola, who had Xavi as one of his key players during his time in charge from 2008 to 2012.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs someone who received his training at the Barcelona academy, with strong influences from Johan Cruyff and Rinus \u2060Michels, among others, I feel a special connection to Dutch football,\u201d Xavi said in a statement on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could say that I am a bit of a son of Dutch football.
