Hapag-Lloyd has signed an agreement with APM Terminals to acquire a 25% stake in APM Terminals Maasvlakte II B.V., in the port of Rotterdam. Both companies will collaborate on the future development of the terminal, expanding its capacity and improving its operational performance.<\/p>\n
The operation also confirms the role of Maasvlakte II as one of the main European hubs of the Gemini Cooperation, the operational cooperation between Hapag-Lloyd and A.P. Moller-Maersk.<\/p>\n
With this stake, Hapag-Lloyd will have long-term access to automated container handling capacity at the terminal. The investment will be made through Hanseatic Global Terminals (HGT), the terminal and infrastructure division of the German shipping company. APM Terminals will maintain operational control of Maasvlakte II.<\/p>\n
The Director of Technology and Infrastructure at Hapag-Lloyd and CEO of Hanseatic Global Terminals, Dheeraj Bhatia, has stated that the planned investment in Rotterdam will improve the efficiency and reliability of the company\u2019s network.<\/p>\n
According to Bhatia, the terminal is a key element for the Gemini Cooperation and fits into Hapag-Lloyd’s strategy to develop a portfolio of terminals in its main markets.<\/p>\n
For his part, the CEO of APM Terminals, Keith Svendsen, has indicated that Hapag-Lloyd’s investment reflects the collaboration between both companies and their commitment to the development and performance of Maasvlakte II in the long term.<\/p>\n
Svendsen also explained that the expansion project currently underway is being developed through collaboration between the Maasvlakte II team, the works council, and the Port Authority of Rotterdam.<\/p>\n
APM Terminals will continue as the operator of the facility. The company plans to focus its management on safety, quality, operational compliance, and costs, while expanding the berth line for ocean traffic and the capacity for container handling.<\/p>\n
APM Terminals Maasvlakte II has been operational since 2015 and is currently in the process of expansion to increase its capacity as a goods entry and exit terminal in Europe.<\/p>\n
The project includes the addition of 1,000 additional meters of berth line for deep-sea traffic, bringing the total length of the docks designated for this type of operation to 2,000 meters.<\/p>\n
The expansion also includes new yard capacity, four additional railway tracks, and the incorporation of Automated Terminal Tractors (ATT), in addition to other automated equipment.<\/p>\n
With the new configuration, the terminal expects to reach an annual handling capacity of up to 5.4 million TEUs. According to the companies, these actions will increase the operational capacity of Maasvlakte II and accommodate future cargo flows through the port of Rotterdam.<\/p>\n
The parties have not disclosed the economic terms of the transaction.
