{"id":39155,"date":"2026-08-20T12:50:21","date_gmt":"2026-08-20T12:50:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/netherlands\/39155\/"},"modified":"2026-08-20T12:50:21","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T12:50:21","slug":"rob-jetten-warns-of-waning-lgbtq-acceptance-among-youth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/netherlands\/39155\/","title":{"rendered":"Rob Jetten warns of waning LGBTQ+ acceptance among youth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Prime Minister of the Netherlands <a href=\"https:\/\/www.attitude.co.uk\/tag\/rob-jetten\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rob Jetten<\/a> has warned that acceptance of LGBTQ+ rights among young people in the Netherlands is \u201cunder huge pressure\u201d, as the country marks 25 years since becoming the first in the world to legalise same-sex marriage.<\/p>\n<p>Jetten made the comments in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.attitude.co.uk\/tag\/Attitude-Pride-Award\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Attitude Pride Awards<\/a> speech in Amsterdam, where he argued that the country cannot afford to become complacent about its reputation as a global pioneer on LGBTQ+ rights.<\/p>\n<p>                Read next<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere in the Netherlands, a lot of work needs to be done,\u201d Jetten said. \u201cWe see the acceptation of queer rights in the younger generation is under huge pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve also been lazy over the past few years\u201d \u2013 Rob Jetten on the Netherlands\u2019 LGBTQ+ progress<\/p>\n<p>His warning came during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.attitude.co.uk\/life\/travel\/all-aboard-for-worldpride-amsterdam-serveing-canals-cocktails-and-celebration-531015\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WorldPride Amsterdam<\/a>, which placed renewed attention on the Netherlands\u2019 LGBTQ+ rights record as the country celebrates the anniversary of its landmark same-sex marriage legislation.<\/p>\n<p>Jetten acknowledged the significance of that history, recalling the moment 25 years ago when the first five same-sex couples in the world married in Amsterdam.<\/p>\n<p>But he cautioned that the Netherlands can be \u201ca bit too proud\u201d of its progress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve also been lazy over the past few years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Jetten says saying queer rights are \u201cunder huge pressure\u201d around the world<\/p>\n<p>Jetten also pointed to political parties in the Netherlands that he says are \u201copenly attacking gay rights\u201d, as well as discussions around legislation that could roll back trans healthcare.<\/p>\n<p>The prime minister warned that the pressure facing LGBTQ+ people is not confined to the Netherlands, saying queer rights are \u201cunder huge pressure\u201d around the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see it online, on social media,\u201d he said. \u201cWe see it in the streets, in bars, and taxis. We see it in countries where new legislation has been introduced to actually criminalise gay rights more instead of improving them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jetten calls for queer communities to work together<\/p>\n<p>But Jetten remains confident that LGBTQ+ communities can push back against the growing opposition.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"793\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.attitude.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/08\/DIGITAL_NOCOVERLINES_372_Cover_PM2VWcdf-793x1024.webp\" alt=\"Rob Jetten on the cover of Attitude magazine\" class=\"wp-image-531906\"  \/>Rob Jetten is Attitude\u2019s September\/October 2026 cover star (Image: Attitude\/Dario &amp; Misja)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can win this fight,\u201d he said, calling for queer communities around the world to work together, support activists in countries where LGBTQ+ people face the greatest pressure and share successful approaches.<\/p>\n<p>He also outlined measures being pursued by his government in the Netherlands, including stronger protections for trans people, improved access to surrogacy for gay and lesbian couples, better police protection for LGBTQ+ people and investment in education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very confident that in the next few years, we can show the world that gay rights are human rights, that love is love, and that we are able to win the fight against the conservative forces that are trying to hold us back,\u201d Jetten said.<\/p>\n<p>Read Rob Jetten\u2019s full interview in issue 372 of Attitude magazine, on sale in print and digital on 27th August 2026.
