{"id":40159,"date":"2026-08-24T22:23:23","date_gmt":"2026-08-24T22:23:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/netherlands\/40159\/"},"modified":"2026-08-24T22:23:23","modified_gmt":"2026-08-24T22:23:23","slug":"explosion-at-dutch-port-of-rotterdam-leaves-1-dead-several-injured-9","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/netherlands\/40159\/","title":{"rendered":"Explosion at Dutch port of Rotterdam leaves 1 dead, several injured"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ROTTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) \u2014 An explosion at the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/migration-museum-rotterdam-netherlands-refugee-41b6c5bae81c42184162bc9d345349d7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dutch port of Rotterdam<\/a> on Thursday killed at least one person and injured several others, city police said.<\/p>\n<p>Police said the blast at Europe\u2019s biggest port happened late Thursday morning and that a crime scene has been set up to try to establish what caused it. In a post on social media, they said the explosion \u201cappears to be a workplace accident for the time being,\u201d without elaborating.<\/p>\n<p>At the scene, Rotterdam police spokesperson Daan Valkenburg told The Associated Press that no definitive conclusions had been drawn and that \u201cwe are keeping all possibilities open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The explosion occurred at a refinery and fuel terminal operated by Gunvor Energy in an industrial section of the sprawling port. Dutch broadcaster NOS said that a maintenance team had been working on a section of pipes there.<\/p>\n<p>Rotterdam&#8217;s emergency services coordinator also reported a major power failure in another part of the port and said that a transformer had caught fire under unexplained circumstances. Several companies halted their operations and evacuated workers.<\/p>\n<p>By mid-afternoon, power was fully restored to the area, where a number of oil and gas companies are based.
