The updates, which began rolling out in July 2026, mark a major expansion of the high-resolution imagery available to ArcGIS users worldwide.

World Imagery is Esri’s flagship imagery basemap, providing high-resolution coverage around the globe. It underpins a wide range of workflows and applications, from visual context to geospatial AI, giving ArcGIS users access to a continually growing wealth of information and insight.

Nearmap brings high-frequency imagery to key metropolitan areas

Starting in the second half of 2026, Esri will integrate and regularly update 20 cm vertical imagery from Nearmap across 200 metropolitan areas in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Nearmap’s capture coverage is extensive, spanning nearly 90 percent of the US population and 96.5 percent of the Australian population.

Founded in 2007, Nearmap is a global property intelligence company that helps organisations understand and act on the built environment. The company owns the entire intelligence value chain, from high-recency geospatial capture powered by patented camera technology to accurate AI-derived analytics and guaranteed building materials data.

Airbus commits to fresher imagery for 2,000 cities worldwide

Also beginning in the second half of 2026, Airbus Defence and Space will start delivering imagery for 2,000 cities around the world as part of a committed refresh cycle at 30 cm resolution. The update is designed to provide fresher, more detailed imagery for urban areas globally.

Airbus has been delivering accurate and consistent imagery for more than 35 years, supporting customers with sophisticated geo-information services and turnkey integrated solutions. Its offerings span the full chain from data acquisition and processing to advanced analytics and data management, helping customers plan and respond to challenges with greater speed and certainty.

The new Airbus basemap imagery is built for consistency and clarity. It offers 30 cm resolution for detailed urban mapping, high geometric accuracy for dependable location context, and nearly cloud-free coverage with minimised haze. Seasonal differences between adjacent images are also reduced, and the committed refresh cycle will help keep imagery current over time.

Mapping the world in ever-finer detail: World Imagery’s combined coverage from Vantor, Airbus, Nearmap and the Community Maps Program. Starting in the second half of 2026, forty major cities and capitals around the world will be upgraded to include HD imagery at 15 cm resolution.

Vantor draws on decades of mission expertise and an industry-leading imaging satellite constellation. Its spatial intelligence system combines software, AI and highly accurate data to build a living digital twin of Earth – a global-scale, interoperable spatial foundation connecting sensors across the space, air and ground domains. Central to this is Vantor’s Vivid Mosaic, which delivers the world’s first 30 cm global basemap, with resolution of up to 15 cm in the most dynamic regions, enabling users to map, visualise and detect feature-level changes anywhere on Earth.

Community contributions continue to enrich the basemap

Alongside these commercial partnerships, Esri continues to draw on its Community Maps Program, which for more than a decade has allowed the GIS community to share local, authoritative data with Esri for use in maps and services distributed back to the community. These contributions come from local and national mapping agencies around the world, as well as through Esri distributors and partners.

Year over year, this crowdsourced imagery continues to enhance World Imagery with recent, high-resolution aerial imagery ranging from 3 to 30 cm, reinforcing the basemap’s position as one of the most comprehensive and current imagery resources available to the geospatial community.

Boston as seen through Airbus Pléiades Neo’s 30cm resolution imagery, with vectorized building footprints added.
