Rosewood Amsterdam<\/a>, set within the former Palace of Justice, is located in the heart of Amsterdam\u2019s UNESCO-listed canal district. It opened just last summer with a bang\u2014and a lineup of must-see details for travelers and locals alike. Here, rich history is reinterpreted through a contemporary lens, mixing art, design, culinary, and wellness elements for a modern take on hospitality. <\/p>\n

Reimagined by Studio Piet Boon<\/a>, the property features 134 rooms, including five signature suites, as well as courtyards, ballrooms, gardens, event spaces, the restaurant Eeuwen<\/a>, the cocktail bar Advocatuur<\/a>, Asaya Spa<\/a>, a dedicated art gallery, and more. Through Dutch craftsmanship, contemporary design, and a coveted art collection of more than 1,000 works, the property immerses travelers in what it calls A Sense of Place<\/a> philosophy\u2014an ethos that channels the individual location\u2019s history, sensibilities, and culture.<\/p>\n

Art is woven into the experience of Rosewood Amsterdam from the moment guests arrive. The hotel\u2019s bespoke collection, curated in collaboration with Kunstmest<\/a>, encompasses nearly 1,000 works selected to tell a layered story of the city\u2019s history, creative energy, and evolving identity.\u00a0 The collection is organized around four themes: Innovative Media, Urban Art, Re-Masters, and Next Generation Talent. Among the works are Frank Stella<\/a>\u2018s bold 1970s wooden reliefs, Maarten Baas<\/a>\u2018 Grandmother Clock, a monumental photograph by Viviane Sassen, and Casper Braat\u2018s Art Vending Machine<\/a>. <\/p>\n

A digital artwork created in collaboration with Nxt Museum<\/a> draws guests through the lobby and into The Gallery<\/a>\u2014a dedicated art gallery currently hosting an exhibition named \u201cEchoes of Speed<\/a>,\u201d featuring photographs by Formula One photographer Vladimir Rys. Inside, rotating shows of works draw guests into a curated experience of creativity and culture, pushing boundaries and presenting avant-garde imagery, paintings, sculptures, and more.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The property\u2019s interiors are equally thoughtful. Studio Piet Boon approached Rosewood Amsterdam as a holistic work of art, balancing the former courthouse\u2019s monumental architecture with a more intimate, residential atmosphere. Oak paneling, bronze accents, honed and rough-finished stone, preserved granite columns, and ornate 19th-century door frames connect the present to the building\u2019s past. Even subtle details nod to its judicial history, including pleated headboards inspired by judges\u2019 collars.<\/p>\n

The Grand Library, once a courtroom, continues this dialogue between past and present. Its dark blue, brown, and green palette creates an enveloping setting for a ceiling-high textile artwork by Patience.studio<\/a> referencing the hidden sketch layer of Rembrandt\u2019s Night Watch, alongside works by Alex van Warmerdam and Raquel van Haver.<\/p>\n

Rosewood Amsterdam\u2019s food and beverage offerings continue the property\u2019s conversation between heritage and contemporary Amsterdam. Designed in collaboration with Sagrada, the hotel\u2019s dining spaces use color, texture, and materiality to establish distinct identities.<\/p>\n

At the heart of the culinary experience is Eeuwen, an \u00e0 la carte restaurant conceived as a contemporary take on the classic brasserie. Cascading foliage, floral patterns, warm oak, linen draperies, and hand-crafted ceramics reflect the Netherlands\u2019 relationship with nature. Its seasonal menu follows the rhythms of the year, with dishes inspired by the times to plant, harvest, fish, and feast. \u201cEeuwen is a gastronomic almanac,\u201d said Chef David Ordo\u00f1ez, \u201cmeticulously crafted to synchronize with the rhythms of nature.\u201d<\/p>\n

For cocktails and conversation, Advocatuur<\/a> takes a moodier, more provocative approach. Inspired by the deep hues of Dutch Golden Age paintings, the bar layers blues, rich reds, and warm amber across textured walls, bespoke rugs, and eclectic furnishings. At its center, an Anglo-Japanese-inspired fractured bar serves as a sculptural focal point. Portraits by Dutch photographer Anton Corbijn\u2014including images of Candy Dulfer, Herman Brood, and Kate Bush\u2014add another layer of cultural history. Advocatuur also puts its own spin on Dutch drinking culture with Pr\u00f8vo<\/a> jenever, a custom, house-distilled Dutch spirit crafted exclusively for the bar at the hotel.<\/p>\n

Down a softly lit staircase, Asaya Spa offers a quieter counterpoint to the energy of the hotel. The space draws on yin-yang philosophy, pairing clean lines and rounded forms with sculptural elements and a progression of light and dark tones. The pool and shared spaces are defined by a muted, light palette, while treatment rooms become more intimate through darker hues. Natural daylight enters through ceiling vents from the courtyard above, subtly changing the atmosphere throughout the day.<\/p>\n

The wellness experience is complemented by art, including two meditative video works by Jaehun Park and a painting by Janine van Oene referencing the movement of water. Rosewood Amsterdam describes its approach to wellness through Ayurvedic-inspired holistic healing modalities, extending the sense of restoration beyond traditional spa treatments, and the facility also includes a pool and 24-hour fitness center.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Perhaps the clearest expression of Rosewood Amsterdam\u2019s connection to its surroundings is found outdoors in De Tuin, a garden designed by celebrated Dutch landscape architect Piet Oudolf. Bringing together indigenous flora and biodiversity, the garden is conceived as an evolving canvas that changes with the seasons and invites guests to slow down and reconnect with nature.<\/p>\n

Inside, the hotel\u2019s programming continues to open doors into Amsterdam\u2019s creative culture. Monthly exhibitions at The Gallery, a curated art walk, and a private salon boat offer guests opportunities to experience the city through different perspectives, while the hotel\u2019s five Houses provide highly personalized spaces rooted in Amsterdam\u2019s neighborhoods and history. <\/p>\n

The Prinsengracht House, Huis 020, Keizersgracht House, Library House, and Herengracht House each interpret a different facet of the city through art, objects, color, and design. The Library House, for example, holds the atmosphere of the former Palace of Justice\u2019s library, with high ceilings, bookshelves, vintage objects, and references to its legal past.<\/p>\n

Combined, these experiences make Rosewood Amsterdam feel like an extension of the city, rather than just a hotel within it. Its architecture remembers where it came from, its art reflects where Amsterdam is going, and its programming invites guests to engage with both.\u00a0<\/p>\n
