{"id":42295,"date":"2026-09-01T20:03:26","date_gmt":"2026-09-01T20:03:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/netherlands\/42295\/"},"modified":"2026-09-01T20:03:26","modified_gmt":"2026-09-01T20:03:26","slug":"india-rejects-ruling-on-water-sharing-treaty-with-pakistan-by-international-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/netherlands\/42295\/","title":{"rendered":"India rejects ruling on water-sharing treaty with Pakistan by international court"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/india?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">India<\/a> must uphold a water-sharing treaty with \u2060<a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/pakistan?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Pakistan<\/a> it suspended amid bilateral tensions and must limit work on a hydroelectric plant it is building in the Kashmir region, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">India in April last year suspended the treaty \u200cthat ensures water supply to 80 per cent of Pakistani farms, after India identified as Pakistani two of three assailants in an attack that killed 26 people at a tourist destination in Kashmir that month.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Islamabad denied any role in the attack and took legal action after India last year also began work to boost reservoir holding capacity at two hydroelectric projects \u2060in the Kashmir region.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">This was seen as a first tangible step by India to operate outside agreements \u200ccovered by the Indus Waters Treaty between the two countries, which both have honoured since 1960 despite three wars and several other conflicts between them.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The \u200cPermanent Court of Arbitration said the Indus Water Treaty remained fully in force, \u2060as India had \u2060no justification for ending or suspending the agreement.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"People gather at the Indus River near Hyderabad, Sindh province, Pakistan, in May last year.
