Stellantis is pausing production of its Fiat 500 city car for three days due to a shortage of components used in the car\u2019s hybrid powertrain. A stoppage is scheduled to begin today at the Mirafiori Assembly Plant in Italy, and go through the 4th.<\/p>\n

What makes this shutdown unusual is the reason behind it. The problem is not weak demand. According to a report from ClubAlfa.it<\/a>, Stellantis told worker representatives that orders for hybrid models are coming in faster than expected, putting pressure on parts suppliers and engine production.<\/p>\n

\nHybrid Demand Creates A Supply Problem<\/p>\n

The Fiat 500 Hybrid has become an important part of Stellantis\u2019 effort to bring more volume back to Mirafiori. The facility also produces the all-electric 500e<\/a>. But over the past couple of years, there has been more demand for a more affordable option, so the Hybrid was implemented into the lineup.<\/p>\n

That strategy appears to be generating more interest than Stellantis originally planned for.<\/p>\n

Mirafiori had just resumed production on August 24th, after its summer shutdown. ClubAlfa.it had previously reported that the 500 Hybrid was running on two shifts with\u00a0targeting production of around 400 vehicles per day as output gradually increased.<\/p>\n

Now, some of the components needed for the hybrid engines reportedly are not reaching Mirafiori fast enough to keep the assembly lines moving at their normal pace. Rather than continue with an uneven supply of parts, Stellantis will idle the lines for three days while production farther up the supply chain catches up.<\/p>\n

\nTeksid Plant Faces Higher Volumes<\/p>\n

Part of the bottleneck reportedly involves the Teksid facility in Carmagnola<\/a>, located south of Turin. That operation is involved with engine production for vehicles assembled at Mirafiori.<\/p>\n

The Carmagnola operation had reportedly been set up around lower production volumes. With hybrid orders now running ahead of expectations, those earlier forecasts are no longer enough to support the pace Stellantis needs.<\/p>\n

The company is working to increase engine and component output to better match the incoming orders.<\/p>\n

\nMirafiori Expected To Restart After September 4th<\/p>\n

Production of the Fiat 500 is expected to get back underway after September 4th.<\/p>\n

A production stoppage is never good news, especially for a plant like Mirafiori, which has already gone through several periods of downtime in recent years. This one, however, comes with a very different explanation. Stellantis is not shutting the lines because it cannot sell the cars. It is temporarily stopping because the supply chain cannot currently feed the hybrid line fast enough.<\/p>\n

For Fiat, that is a much better problem to have.<\/p>\n

The next question is whether Stellantis and its suppliers can raise component production quickly enough to keep Mirafiori running without additional interruptions as Fiat 500 Hybrid orders continue to build<\/a>.<\/p>\n
