Alex Van Halen has received one of the Netherlands\u2019 highest civilian honors, with the legendary Van Halen drummer officially appointed a Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The 73-year-old musician received the royal decoration on Tuesday, September 1, in Nijmegen, the Dutch city where he and his late brother, Eddie Van Halen, spent part of their childhood before their family moved to the United States.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The prestigious honor recognizes exceptional contributions to society across fields including the arts, science, sports\u00a0and literature. Alex received the distinction during a ceremony at Radboud University’s Berchmanianum academy building, where Nijmegen mayor Hubert Bruls presented him with the decoration.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Born Alexander Arthur Van Halen in Amsterdam, Alex moved with his family to Nijmegen shortly after his birth. His brother Edward Lodewijk \u201cEddie\u201d Van Halen was also born in Amsterdam, and the brothers spent their early years in the Netherlands.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The family eventually\u00a0relocated\u00a0to the United States in 1962, settling in Pasadena, California. Alex and Eddie later became naturalized American citizens, but their Dutch roots have\u00a0remained\u00a0an important part of their story.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cAlex still feels a connection with Nijmegen, and Nijmegen in turn honors the band,\u201d the city said in announcing the distinction.\u00a0<\/p>\n
