That figure, equivalent to 78.39 metric tonnes, refers to New York alone rather than the widely circulating combined figure. De Nederlandsche Bank, known as DNB, disclosed the transfer publicly on Wednesday, and separately removed 7.35 metric tonnes from Ottawa. After the reshuffle, New York and Ottawa each sit at 18.5%, London jumps to 32.1% and becomes the largest single location, and the Netherlands itself holds 30.8%. Total Dutch gold reserves stand at 612.4 metric tonnes, valued at \u20ac72.2 billion, or roughly $83.6 billion, at the end of 2025. That valuation is not current. This specific transfer was worth approximately \u20ac10.1 billion to \u20ac10.3 billion, or about $10.7 billion to $10.9 billion.  <\/p>\n<p>            How the Gold Actually Moved         <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">The mechanics deserve attention because they are widely misunderstood. Only roughly 27 metric tonnes were physically transferred, routed through DNB&#8217;s secure facility in Zeist and then on to London. The remaining roughly 59 metric tonnes was handled by selling gold held in New York and buying an equivalent amount in London rather than crating up bars and flying them across the Atlantic. It is a book transfer for most of the tonnage, with real bullion changing hands only for the smaller share.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Per DutchNews.nl, DNB has repeatedly warned about Dutch reliance on the United States since Donald Trump returned to the White House. The bank also explicitly stated it is not worried the U.S. would seize the reserves. Germany completed a comparable repatriation in 2017, pulling hundreds of tonnes from New York and Paris to Frankfurt, and the Bank of France moved bullion from New York to Paris earlier in 2026. Global central bank gold purchases have surged to multi-decade highs since 2022, propelled by inflation hedging, sanctions risk after Russian reserves were frozen, and a broader push to trim dollar-denominated exposure. Gold traded near $4,383 an ounce on Wednesday, well above the $2,605 close on December 31, 2024.
