SUCCESS STORY:
\n Taiwan\u2019s semiconductor journey reflected the plight of the main character in Homer\u2019s epic, Taiwan\u2019s representative to the Netherlands said <\/p>\n

A documentary tracing the development of Taiwan\u2019s semiconductor industry over the past five decades was on Thursday screened at a special showing in The Hague. <\/p>\n

In a news release on Friday, the Taipei Representative Office in the Netherlands said it held a screening of A Chip Odyssey (\u9020\u5c71\u8005-\u4e16\u7d00\u7684\u8ced\u6ce8) at the Bar Beton center in the city\u2019s central train station for more than 100 attendees. <\/p>\n

The screening included a special panel discussion on the film, which included Taiwanese expats and members of the Dutch media. <\/p>\n

The film is Taiwan\u2019s first documentary spotlighting its world-leading semiconductor industry and chronicling the nation\u2019s rise from underdog to becoming the central hub of the global chip supply chain over the past five decades. <\/p>\n

Its Chinese title, Mountain Builders, was derived from the film\u2019s intention to \u201cdeliver the spirit of the mountain builders\u201d \u2014 those who have helped propel the nation\u2019s semiconductor ascent, the film\u2019s director, Hsiao Chu-chen (\u856d\u83ca\u8c9e) said. <\/p>\n

Another reason for the title is Taiwan\u2019s nickname for semiconductor giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), \u201cThe Mountain that Guards the Nation,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

As for the English title, Hsiao said she named it \u201cOdyssey\u201d after drawing inspiration from the ancient Greek epic about a hero\u2019s long and arduous journey home \u2014 a path filled with challenges, much like Taiwan\u2019s journey in developing its semiconductor industry. <\/p>\n

At the screening, Taiwan\u2019s representative to the Netherlands, Tien Chung-kwang (\u7530\u4e2d\u5149), said that Taiwan\u2019s semiconductor journey reflected the plight of the main character in Homer\u2019s epic. <\/p>\n

Tien said that, like Odysseus, it took several decades for Taiwan\u2019s semiconductor industry to overcome obstacles and bring success home, through skills such as foresight and innovation. <\/p>\n

Taiwan\u2019s technological advancements were the result of a positive talent cultivation environment that was founded upon the respect for democracy and human rights, Tien said, adding that the nations would continue to work with like-minded governments to help further technological advancement around the world. <\/p>\n

Besides Taiwanese and Dutch officials, several experts in tech and global politics were also among the guest list for the screening and the subsequent panel. <\/p>\n

Panelists at the event included Chen Lin-lin (\u9673\u73b2\u9234), dean of the Industrial Design Department and a full professor of design innovation strategy at the Netherlands\u2019 Eindhoven University of Technology, as well as the Hague Centre for Strategic Studies strategic analyst Benedetta Girardi and Bloomberg former Netherlands bureau chief Cagan Koc. <\/p>\n
