(Peter Boer\/Bloomberg News)<\/p>\n<p>\n April 23, 2026 11:10 AM, EDT<\/p>\n<p>Shell Plc said Europe\u2019s oil refineries are working flat-out to make jet fuel as airlines warn of a supply crunch, with the aviation industry fast becoming a primary pinch point because of the Iran war.<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s own plant, Europe\u2019s biggest in the port of Rotterdam, is now churning out as much of the fuel as it can, Frans Everts, head of the company\u2019s Dutch business, told journalists on April 22 at the site. He didn\u2019t elaborate on what those levels were.\n      \t  \t\t<\/p>\n<p>READ\u00a0 MORE:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ttnews.com\/articles\/europe-6-weeks-jet-fuel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Europe Has &#8216;Maybe 6 Weeks of Jet Fuel Left,&#8217; IEA Chief Says<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery clearly every refinery in Europe is on what we call max jet mode,\u201d he said.\n      \t\t<\/p>\n<p>Europe is heavily reliant on imports of jet fuel, having lost its main source of external supply due to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ttnews.com\/articles\/shipping-hormuz-frozen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">closure of the Strait of Hormuz<\/a>. While airlines now face eye-watering prices for fuel, the conflict has also pushed up the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ttnews.com\/articles\/oil-prices-above-100-iran\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cost of crude<\/a> on international markets, eroding margins for oil processors and raising questions as to how hard they run their fuel-making plants.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Shell Pernis refinery in Rotterdam has been forced to look for alternatives to crude grades from the Middle East where some of the world\u2019s biggest oil producers have been forced to cut production. The near full closure of the vital Hormuz energy channel has choked off millions of barrels of supply since the end of February. EasyJet Plc estimates that the Middle East conflict added 25 million pounds ($34 million) in fuel costs in March. Alaska Air Group Inc. this week\u00a0suspended\u00a0guidance for the full year and forecast a deeper loss than Wall Street was expecting for the second quarter.<\/p>\n<p>Dutch carrier KLM has said it will operate fewer flights from Amsterdam\u2019s Schipol airport, which is supplied from Pernis.
