{"id":5652,"date":"2026-04-24T11:37:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-24T11:37:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/netherlands\/5652\/"},"modified":"2026-04-24T11:37:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T11:37:11","slug":"studioninedots-fronts-skinny-amsterdam-home-with-glass-blocks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/netherlands\/5652\/","title":{"rendered":"Studioninedots fronts skinny Amsterdam home with glass blocks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/glass-bricks\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Glass bricks<\/a>, metal grilles and glossy tiles lend an industrial character to Light House, a family <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/houses\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">home<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/netherlands\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Netherlands<\/a> designed by local architecture practice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/studioninedots\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Studioninedots<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Located in Centrumeiland, a newly developed neighbourhood of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/amsterdam\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Amsterdam<\/a>, the tall, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/skinny-houses\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">skinny home<\/a> was created for a family who wanted spaces that would allow &#8220;each family member to live differently&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In response to this brief, <a href=\"https:\/\/studioninedots.nl\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Studioninedots<\/a> designed the home as a five-storey stack of volumes, each containing different functions.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2320278 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/netherlands\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/studioninedots-light-house-amsterdam_dezeen_2364_col_17-852x1277.jpg\" alt=\"Exterior view of glass brick home in Amsterdam\" width=\"1577\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Studioninedots has completed a family home in the Netherlands<\/p>\n<p>The volumes that make up Light House are separated by voids wrapped in glass bricks and metal grilles, which filter light and air through the interiors.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The design is inspired by the clients&#8217; wish for a light-filled home that encourages each family member to live differently, while creating spaces for encounter and connection between the four,&#8221; Studioninedots partner Metin van Zijl told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;How can a five-level vertical house on a compact footprint make encounters feel self-evident, while balancing privacy and social interaction? Or as we called it throughout the design process, &#8216;living apart and together,'&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2320262 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/netherlands\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/studioninedots-light-house-amsterdam_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x1277.jpg\" alt=\"Rear view of Dutch home by Studioninedots\" width=\"1577\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Its form was conceived as a five-storey stack of volumes<\/p>\n<p>Behind a glass-brick facade, the entrance of Light House leads into an open double-height living, dining and kitchen area organised around a tree, with the intersecting, rectilinear volumes of the rooms above visible overhead.<\/p>\n<p>This open space creates an axis directly through into the home&#8217;s garden via sliding glass doors and is further illuminated by expanses of glass brickwork at both the front and rear of the home.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2320260 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/netherlands\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/studioninedots-light-house-amsterdam_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x1277.jpg\" alt=\"Front facade of glass brick home by Studioninedots\" width=\"1577\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Glass bricks and metal grilles filter light and air through the interiors<\/p>\n<p>Above this living space is a small &#8220;retreat&#8221; room for watching films, relaxing and yoga, next to a small mezzanine atop the entrance porch and bathroom that overlooks the ground floor below.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By subtly separating its programmatic elements and distributing them across different levels, a new way of living emerges,&#8221; said van Zijl. &#8220;In this way, multiple places are created throughout the day to sit comfortably and experience the house in different ways.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/04\/12\/ian-moore-architects-corner-store\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/netherlands\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/the-corner-store-residential-extension-ian-moore-architects-surry-hills-sydney-australia-architectur.jpeg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"The Corner Store\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> Ian Moore Architects transforms Sydney pub into house with &#8220;wall of light&#8221;\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The geometric qualities of the home&#8217;s intersecting volumes have been emphasised by minimalist white finishes throughout, complemented by timber doors and a kitchen island finished in glossy, deep-red tiles.<\/p>\n<p>Externally, a more industrial feel is created by glass brickwork on the home&#8217;s lower levels, metal cladding on the upper levels and metal grilles encasing bedroom terraces at the rear.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2320269 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/netherlands\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/studioninedots-light-house-amsterdam_dezeen_2364_col_8-852x1277.jpg\" alt=\"Living space interior at Light House home in the Netherlands\" width=\"1577\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A double-height living, dining and kitchen area is organised around a tree<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The exterior is composed of neutral, industrial, and thus timeless materials, while the interior is enriched with warm, tactile finishes that create intimacy,&#8221;
