THE HAGUE (Reuters)\u00a0\u2013\u00a0The U.N. war crimes court has ordered an independent medical assessment of lifetime inmate\u00a0Ratko\u00a0Mladic<\/a>, after the 84-year-old Bosnian Serb\u00a0general\u00a0sought early release on health grounds, court documents published Tuesday showed.<\/p>\n

Mladic\u00a0is serving\u00a0a life sentence<\/a>\u00a0for genocide and crimes against humanity in the 1992-95 war in Bosnia, and is currently held in the U.N. detention unit in The Hague.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0general\u00a0filed a motion for early release on humanitarian grounds, the court said, because he is in a state of \u201cadvanced, irreversible medical decline resulting from a medical incident.\u201d<\/p>\n

That incident landed him briefly in a hospital emergency room earlier in April but additional details were redacted in the filings.<\/p>\n

Now, a U.N. judge has ordered a report no later than May 1 assessing\u00a0Mladic\u2019s current health, life expectancy and standard of care in the detention unit and prison hospital.<\/p>\n

The court previously found\u00a0that while\u00a0Mladic\u2019s health condition was precarious, it was stable and well managed at the detention unit.<\/p>\n

Mladic\u00a0suffers from cognitive impairments, and following the medical incident, has been\u00a0hospitalized multiple times<\/a>\u00a0in recent years, according to earlier court documents and hearings.<\/p>\n

He led Bosnian Serb forces during Bosnia\u2019s 1992-95 war, part of the bloody breakup of Yugoslavia.<\/p>\n

Mladic\u00a0was convicted on charges of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, including terrorising the civilian population of Bosnian capital Sarajevo<\/a>, and the killing of more than 8,000 Muslim men and boys taken prisoner in the eastern town of Srebrenica<\/a> in 1995.<\/p>\n
